Eighton Bahn AKA testing testing RhB

Well after a couple of bags of fill, compost/soil, the plants (8) are in...

...hopefully the ones next to the wall will trail over it, but knowing my lack of green fingers they will all die.o_O

Over the last few days, managed to do the first running sessions of 2026, more of a testing of the tunnel mouths, but with the distance viewing reversing point incicators also tested out, bit of a failure in that one, they do work but carn't be seen form the normal viewing position...

...I should have painted the inside the tunnels black, but I am sure a couple of rattle cans will sort it...

More testing today, well you need to continue to ensure the recent works are fit for purpose...

Have had to swap over a new point motor as it too stiff to be reliable enough to return the switch blades to the main line, from the reversing loop setting, causing trains to split the point and derail. The replacement, an older spare point motor, is slack enough to make it an reliable throw. One strange thing of note though, was that it had to have the power feeds swapped around to get the matched setting to it's twin.

Continuing with the playing sorry testing yesterday...

...note to self, if you have to reverse the train to get the shot after it overshoots the mark, remember to switch the pantograph over, so it looks like it's going in the right direction, rear pan up is the policy here...

...we appear to be sort of over run with Ladybirds this year, as opposed to this one that was nearly runover as it was on the running rail a few seconds earlier.

Managed to press the last two locos of the fleet into service yesterday...

20260502_133346[1].jpg

...that wagon is a bit of a sod, derailed and twice the axle side frame on the dreailed end came off, it's a clip fit item, but required the removal of the body to ensure the fit the second time as it must not have been fully home the first...

...no smoke without fire, but there was smoke fluid and the function was switched on, the diesel on the other hand was chucking out exhaust as if it was going out of fashion.

Looking good, love the tunnel portals.

As reported elsewhere, I have a new to me coach, LGB 31678. There was a period of will it won't it turn up, but I collected it today and so to work...

...first remove the roof to gain access and re fit the door glass...

...fit and change the position of a few...

...finally the addition of a coupling hook to the other end, as per company standards, and so it's now joined the fleet, and ready for service.

Feeling envious. Not of the coach, but those screwdrivers and associated rack.

New coach has been pressed into service...

...so I now have the train I allways wanted, apart from green resturant coach, yes I know there is no such animal, they are blue, but I can but dream, or buy a coach and do a respray.

Another day another track scrubbing/cleaning, track rubbing ahead of a self driving loco of sorts...

20260517_114048[1].jpg

...we also have in our hobby the law of uninteded actions, and this has proven to be the case with the recent CV tweek of the Stainz to get the smoke unit working better, resulting in blowing headlight bulbs. So that needed looking at today...

20260517_140751[1].jpg

...so with that sorted, time for some more testing...

...I now have a strange idea of rebuilding the station. It may come to nothing, but who knows? Well not me for one.

There are two sayings one about life giving you lemons, make lemonaid, the other adout faith shifting mountains.
Well today has been a one about gardening works next door what has been dug up and a wheelbarrow...

...it's rough n ready, may settle, but it's free and there could be more to come.

Gordon, what are you planning to put in those old turfs? Perhaps right side up could give you a grass surface that could be strimmed. Almost certainly that grass will grow through the gaps.

Most certainly turn those turfs the other way up, unless there is a very good reason. They will knit seamlessly together in no time. Reminds me of a neighbour about 10 years ago, a few doors down, posting on the village FB page, "Breaking up concrete paths would anybody like to collect. Good for hardcore. Saves going down the recycling centre". Would I like ? Me, the operator of a D&RGW themed garden railway like ? With my reputation. A bit of a no brainer, better use than for hardcore. Rockies here I come ! I was down there in a shot with my barrow, 5 loads !

There is a load of topsoil to come as well, infact as I type this it's getting chucked over the fence. :)
So once I pack the grass sods down and maybe re arange them, the soil will go on top, it's all a bit make it up as you go along, in my best tradition.
So in essence the sods are more of a filler, but for quickness they were just sort of dumped in place yesterday.

I knew you had a plan >:)>:)

Relying on Sod's Law are we?

Now the the sods, spoil and topsoil have been moved, I am not sure if I am happy with the "hill" at the far end of the line...

20260521_160209[1].jpg

...now whilst from that angle it looks OK, from the station end it obscures the "S" curve, Seaweed cutting and most of the passing loop. So trains will have to be driven blind as it were, but you can still see one end of the passing loop (I created the hill that way.) I suppose it will need to be tested, to see how it works, and if doesn't then a couple of hours with a wheelbarrow and a shovel can change it.
