I've just seen this metal professional lawn and border edging product which bolts together and can be bent into curves, although not cheap it looks like a good way to hold gavel or concrete to make a trackbed that won't spread:-

I haven't used it to contain the railway, but have used it around flower beds, and trees. It's good stuff and very effective.

I do have some plans to use it for the railway next year. It looks good and is pretty indestructible.

Galvanised steel buried in the ground ... I wonder how long that will last?

Probably a lot longer than todays, supposedly treated, timber products!
;) :D :D

Unless you have very acidic or salty soil products galvanised to professional standards should last at least 20 years. The cages they use for farming sea fish only need recoating every 10 years and they are submerged on salt water. The old Anderson air raid shelters were galvanised steel half buried in the ground and in many areas they still were there 50 years later.

Some of the "Plastic" or PVC wood like products would work very well. We have a product that goes by the trade name Azek. It cuts easily and also can be formed to a curve very easily. It is available in 1/2" and 3/4" thickness and standard board widths from nominal 2" to 12". It comes in white or an assortment colors and wood grain textures. It's not nearly as costly as the product you posted however.
