I promised to post to some pics of a scratch built item I call Dr Suess. The impetus for this item was to add some wymsy to my display layout for the Caulfield Model Train Exhibition, Melbourne. But before that I took the model to the National Garden Railroad Convention in Las Vegas. (My first foray into garden railway conventions).
This was the plan......... mocked (mucked) up from card and mdf.
Some refinements had taken place here, including painting and the addition of 'lights' from a weird McDonalds toy. Note the screws to hold the sections in place. (This was to be a loco that could be dismantled and re-assembled off-shore!)
Almost complete.......

xx
Coal bucket now full, all that is missing is a replacement for the cardboard cut-out of The Cat. I wasn't to know it, but a trip to Granville Island Vancouver, BC fixed the problem.
And so it was. This pic shows our travels on this trip in 2007, via Japan, Canada, NY and across to Vegas for the convention. I was able to purchase finger puppets of The Cat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 at a stall on Granville Island.

And this is the knocked-down version that I had to assemble in the Vegas hotel room to enter into the model contest. (I ended up not taking the motor block for security reasons)
Finally, I can claim that the model won the 'Best in Show' at the National Garden Railroad Convention' in Las Vegas in 2007 - a copy of the certificate will be posted shortly.
(I hesitate to mention that it was one of THREE models actually entered at the show) I think that our mates in the States are not really into model entries at conventions. The rest of the conventions are fantastic however, especially the layout tours.
I would be interested to hear of others' experiences of US conventions.
