If you are considering MyLocoSound units for track powered locos please check their DCC compatibility.
If memory serves me right they were analogue or battery only, However they keep developing their product so that may no longer be the case.

However, for a battery or RC loco, they will be fine.. - There is an alternative, which is a few pounds cheaper, but it only has start-up, shut-down (of engine) and horn..
Sadly the horn sounds still let these down I think.
I have an early first generation MyLocosound diesel card in one of my DCC fitted Playmobil locos. I've not run it for a while but from memory I'm sure there was a little more variation in engine revs than shown in that video above.

If you are wanting radio control then as Phil said, the cheaper m-tronics soundcard does not have so many options. But it does to my mind sound better and not so electronic. Although made for model boats (it's waterproof!), I have now fitted quite a few this is one I fitted one to a Roundhouse Little John. Also, the m-tronics card is just a connect it up, and off you go.. The MLS cards do require a little setting up, which though not difficult, can be a little daunting the first-time.
The later cards have a TV type of remote as an accesory at additional cost to give quite a bit of variation as one of Rik's vids shows.

I don't know about being cheaper.
The M-Troniks sound cards I saw listed are £65.99 & £199.00 each.
I too, have an early My Loco sound card, purchased direct from the UK. It's fitted into my LGB # 50 Caterpillar loco. I like it.
Probably not entirely true, but the spec says for Track Powered DC or Battery Powered Railways. They are suitable for up to 24 v DC so if wired to the Motor Supply direct they would be ok as that is DC. However you would not get any sound when not running nor would you be able to enect the varying sound functions without some fancy chip work, that is if the Chip Supported things like Servos etc.
Actually, a question is that do the MLS cards do ok with all PWM found that is usually driving motors in RC applications?
They simply are not DCC, so any remote operation (besides the motor issue) with DCC would have to be somewhat involved, requiring more cost than a DCC decoder itself.
In this case Sarah started this, and from all the DCC equipment she has, it would seem that we should advise her with that in mind.
Sarah, for your smaller locos, you can buy HO DCC decoders for very little money that have sound, sophisticated motor control, sophisticated lighting control, and the sound is even "modulated" to reflect the actual load on the loco as it goes up and down grades, accelerates and decelerates.
There's simply no comparison to these features with a simple DC sound card.

Glad you like our new Light Diesel soundcard. On this one we have used 100% recorded sounds; the two tone horn was actually recorded on a Deltic! Unfortunately the soundcard is DC track power or battery radio control only and there is unlikely to be a DCC version. A couple of years ago we did a DCC sound decoder for small scale but found that we spent far too much time on the phone teaching customers how to set addresses and change CVs. Our survey last year showed that there were just not enough large scale DCC users to make it worthwhile.

I apologise for the delay in replying but I and other people I know in Australia have had major problems with G Scale Central in the past ten days. We have lost all graphics and only see a list of text down the screen. This makes it very difficult to read and impossible to reply to.

It was quite a few years ago now that I wired my early MyLocosound card with an ESU LokPilot decoder, in a Playmobil diesel. If I remember correctly the soundcard is powered off a DCC function output (to give my sound on/off) and the horn is triggered by a second function output. The soundcard's motor-speed sense inputs are connected across the decoder motor outputs.
The black tape on the soundcard is simply to cover the LEDs so they didn't show through the bodyshell!

Just to clarify some of the questions posed in previous posts:
The MLS card can be used on DCC and will produce speed related sounds AND stay on between duties in its trackpower mode, using a rechargeable 9v backup battery (charged during use). However, to operate the additional sounds such as horns, bells etc, auxiliary outputs from the DCC decoder will be required. Refer to the detailed manual for your decoder to check if you have the capability.
The Light Diesel card can be used as it comes and is easy to wire up with reliable connections, there is no need for set-up and no requirement for the £10 remote, but if you do get it, you can choose various options and also control the card in use, such as turning the volume up or down. For example, if you don't like the horn tone, you can vary the pitch and the volume.
As to cost, well it's £55. That's more than some offerings, but less than most, including the ubiquitous Mtronics Digisound Small diesel, which is a very popular seller for us at £59, but now has a serious competitor.
