Crossing 1:1 scale paths and driveways....

Hello all. I am soon to relay my ground level patio section. The bit outside my french doors sees heavy foot traffic. I would love to see pictures of your solutions, and read your ideas for crossings for people and vehicles of the 1:1 variety. I have screwed track to the patio but 3 years of daily traffic has left ut battered but functional. Need a better solution.

I used some off cuts of slabs with the rail head below the top surface, and some recycled plastic packging for this crossing....

I did once try gluing some K&N brass angled strip against the chairs of the track and cementing the 4 foot and the cess.

But I think my mortar mix was a bit weak as it didn't last a winter.

Might be worth a try though....

The best solution, in my opinion, is to tunnel under the area. I doubt that's happening however. Short of that, recessing the track so that the rail head is level with the surrounding pavers. Simplest way would be to cut the existing pavers in place with a diamond saw. Set the track in the trough and ballast it.

If by some chance the tunnel option is approved, I would place a metal grate over it. This way an eye could be kept on the goings on down there.

Just cover it with concrete up to rail top.
The top 2 tracks in the pic are my timber sleepers, just buried in concrete.
The bottom track is a later addition - I cut 2 grooves with and angle grinder for the brass rails, and used a grout of pure cement (no sand) to hold the rails - no sleepers. I use a few spacers to keep the rails in gauge till the cement was `prety hard` then pulled them out, and filled in. At the same time, use a screwdriver or similar to cut the grooves for the flanges to run in
Been there  15 years or more.

IMPORTANT:  the rails MUST be JUST above the level of the path or you will have cowcatchers scrapping the concrete.

I used a section just like Gregh suggested on my line in Luton (2 layouts ago), it was under a Conifer with constant dropping of pines etc. This needed sweeping every time I wanted to run. When I last looked about 3 years ago was still in place after 3 new owners of the House.

I know several people with track crossing paths and they have the track cemented in with check rails holding the cement off the rails on the inside.

I guess looking at your pix that you have routed out a channel for the rails, and then screwed them down to keep the gauge correct....

Tunneling is civil engineering beyond spousal approval, so I will adopt one of the others. The patio is quite new so cutting into it not ideal, but it would look good! but perhaps not to a buyer if I wanted to sell!

No. The pics turn out small. But, if you click on the file name and download them, Windows displays them almost full screen. Can anyone suggest a way to get the pics to load directly into the post at a reasonable size. I used the "inline" option. Is there a better way?

I tend to use the 'Attachments and Other Options' in the reply window and it seems to work for me....

When you add the pictures to your posts using the "Attachments and Other Options" bit, make sure that you select "Insert As Display"  Before you attach the pictures.
