Buy it Now on ebay

Normally I sell things on ebay on auction basis but I thought I would try a buy it now price as well.
For those wanting to try this, you should know that as soon as the first person places a bid below the buy it now price, the buy it now option disappears from the listing. I assumed it would stay until either the auction ended or someone offered the buy it now price. I asked ebay why and they said it is because there is a chance that two people may end up believing they have won the item, one because they bid the highest auction price and the other because they had offered the buy it now price. Rather a specious argument IMO but they own the rule book. It kind of makes the buy it now option fairly useless IMO. There is a fixed price option as well of course. Just passing this on in case others didn't know this and it will save them 50p which is the current sellers fee for buy it now option.

You could always include a reserve price (set at the buy it now level if you wish). Then if bids have already reached an acceptable level near the auction end there is the option to remove or reduce it permitting the highest bidder to win the item.

eBay do explain how the BIN and auction options used together work, i.e. once a bid is placed then the BIN option is ended. Personally, I don't see any problem with this, the important thing to do is to choose your BIN price and minimum bid value carefully. The first time I used both together, I had a minimum bid of 99p and a BIN price of £14.99. In the last hour of the auction, someone bid 99p and won the item. One down to experience there. So the trick is to set your minimum bid price close to the BIN price.

I have used both the straight forward auction process, the BIN process and both together and usually now go for a straight BIN, setting the price a bit above what I'd be happy to accept to leave room for offers.

EBay will only allow a BIN price at least 40% more than the starting price. They didn't use to and you could often see BIN prices just a few pence above but not any more.
