[align=center]I fancied for a while this little loco, and thought about changing it into something else,

5d0fa1af83914aeb8f20ac5efe90fc90.jpg

The price was right at mr two jags, so ut arrived for testing.

the motor unit runs very sweetly, and once the collector removed would haul a reasonable load of eight ore cars,

[align=center]I found a loco that I liked and was one of the last steam locos to ruin in New York area so fitted my era.

I then removed some of the european look and lowered the boiler and cab by around 12mm,

[align=center]After testing on the track I then started making room for the battery and the control unit, this looks drastic but the saddle tank hides most any way,

I made a new cab floor and fixed the tank so there is a place for the wiring,
I also moved the bell and headlamp and made a new stack from an Aristo smoke unit from a cabboose, I also removed all the molded handrail detail,
bdf7d22b0d3d4985b9ca72a838bb688a.jpg

As this ended its days as an oil fired loco, I removed the coal from the bunker and faked a pair of oil tanks,

New brass hand rails and door handle fitted,

as I had lowered it the bottom rung of the step was also removed and I lowered the pilot beams to fit a standard #1 gauge Kadee coupler,

I liked the look of the old nearly retired driver so kept him on board,

[align=center]I will paint this loco when I get the backhead detail done and leave the running gear alone for now as all I would do is make new cylinder units

Since lowering it it looks much better as it is now lower than the box cars it will switch

Could you tell me about the battery you have fitted? Looks like a gelcel. How many volts, amps, weight etc.
I have fitted a gelcel to a trail car as my first battery becuase of availability. The weight is 2.2 kilos = 4lbs 6 ozs approx.
This weight in a trail has reduced the amount of wagons my locos can pull. Much better to fit into loco.
Thanks for the great photos & ideas that we can all share in.

Hi Andrew,
the battery is a sealed lead acid type used in intruder alarms, rated twelve volt , 1.2 ah
its approx 500gram weight, I use an on board charger that charges from the track, when stationary and the track is supplied at 14.5volts dc, I used one of those battery boxcars and stopped for the same reason, the loco had a 500gram ballast weight inside so the battery is about the same, I dont use nicads as I find them a bit too unpredictable, all my other locos have the same type of battery in and are of different sizes depending on the room I have
regards Pete

[align=center]I did some detail on the backhead and painted over some of the shiny plastic, the driver now got some bits to fiddle with,
75061eac521b43c9afa141a037f65651.jpg

I fitted a dummy oil burner unit to the firebox door, the bits are dressmakers presstuds soldered to wire,

I will fit a small lamp in the cab soon, it will be wired to the pickups directly and will let me know as an indicator that the battery is charging,

That's a very nice conversion, could you describe how you lowered the shell on the chassis please?

Live long and prosper.

[align=center]I started by sawing 10mm from the saddle under the smoke box,
the firebox skirt the scrubbed the rear wheels so that was filed away for clearance,I also took of the air tanks and the german looking front steps, I will put one back on when I remove some of the motion work, to look more like a Porter loco
d38a3e38de5d4013926e3231905ccac1.jpg

at the back I cut way the plastic under the cab and made a new slot for the rear frame to sit into, this meant that the rear steps were one tread too many so that was cut off as well,I used the coupling gauge from Kadee as a datum for the beams and was able to fit a standard short coupler in a pocket,
a094f8b1fe4e4cbaa56b50991d915516.jpg

the front and rear pilots where spaced lower you can see the bolts and nuts holding them lower on the front pilot the rear bunker had twelve mm approx cut off the bottom,
as the boiler running boards and cab are one unit, it makes it easier to do the adjustments,as a whole unit,
e859842f87944919970f3392246b3eb5.jpg

As I wanted a smoke unit and the loco had a tall stack I used a standard smoke unit from an aristo cabboose,
bd003ec9ae534261a6fdf5e4ca3bfb7d.jpg

As a height comparison is difficult I use a standard unmodified Aristo bobber cabboose, this shows it 'present' height next to a standard object
ad42c25cae3f4a5393b7a62291e012af.jpg

Hope this helps, I will find the bits I took off shortly
