I've been away from the forum for a while - busy at work and other life things...
However, I was working quite close to Princes Risborough last week so decided to take a trip to GRS - just for a look around - and came back with this...

I'm really a British outline modeller, but it caught my eye because it was marked as not working with a very tempting £40 price tag! I do love a bargain and a project, and really liked the look of the chassis - great looking metal side rods, etc., so I couldn't resist. There didn't 'look' much wrong with it functionally and as I suspected on opening it up I found some RC gear inside (I'm selling those bit on eBay so expect to recoup a bit of the investment!). The motor turned nicely when given a bit of power, so I have removed the RC gear, put a DCC decoder in it and it now runs very nicely indeed!
I went with a reasonably priced Zimo MX635 decoder - really an 0 gauge decoder, but it has a decent current rating (1.8A continuous). I'm fairly convinced that my locos rarely draw more than 1A - trains are quite short on my line and top speed is very limited. In any case my 4 year old tested it for me at maximum speed with a couple of coaches and it ran very well. I've now limited the top speed to something more sensible for my line!
I think what I've got is an old Bachmann Ten Wheeler body - sanding the tender revels Atchison Topeka Santa Fe on green, red cab roof, number 7. It has been sprayed black and had most of the detail parts removed. The tender has been fitted with metal wheels in brass bearings (which needed an evening of fettling, but now run nicely).
I'm pretty sure the loco chassis is a newer replacement in excellent condition - missing only the cowcatcher and bars to the smokebox I think - in any case this is in great condition and happily runs really well.
I had thought that I would extract the chassis and ditch the body, but quite quickly became attached to the whole thing - so instead I'm going to attempt a bit of a restoration. In order for it to feel at home on my railway I will imagine that my narrow gauge railway company has imported this large tender engine from the Baldwin in the US (much like the Lyn on the L&B). I'm going to sand it down, repaint to look a bit more British and detail it. My wife and son have decided on red for the loco, so red it shall be!
I have added a brass cow catcher - also bought from GRS - and begun sanding down the body.

I wonder if any members in the UK have any spare parts which I am missing, and would be prepared to let go of, for a reasonable fee - a loco bell (the newer Spectrum type), a light (missing from the tender), the two side air tanks, the two side running boards? I do have a plan to remake most of those, but thought it was worth checking! I know the parts are available on the US spares website, but the shipping cost is quite high, so I probably won't go that way. I could also try Bachmann UK. Trying here first, just in case.
Anyway - this is the start of the project - I'll keep this thread updated with my progress.
