Bachmann G Scale Figures(scenecraft).

Over the years I've been collecting various makes of figures. Most are Schleich figures but an increasing number are Bachmann. I've noticed that with the latest figures there are subtle differences between these and the older figures. The latest figures are more upright, heads are held higher, clothing is less angular.

Here are some of the other figures. The policeman is painted to represent BTP officer. The rail staff have added hi-vis.

The amount of Schleich figures seems to have diminished. A couple of years back there were various farm hands, tourists, children playing, Safari staff and vets. They seem to have dropped the entire Western series.

While animals (farm and wild/zoo) do form a large part of Schleich's range, they have an interesting and often useful figure selection too; farming figures, horse riders and grooms, forestry workers with chainsaws, vets and zoo staff, that sort of thing. They also do (did?) Wild West figures and a whole range of Fantasy figures (Wizards, Knights, Princesses and Dragons etc) for those with more unusual railways.....

They are a little bit larger than regular G scale figures such as Preiser, Prehm and Scenecraft, as they are nominally 1:20 rather than 1:22.5-1:24, but this is not enough to worry about if you are careful how you mix them in your scenes - plus of course they are near-perfect for the 1:19 scale often associated with 16mm.....

The Bachmann figures are nicely formed and pretty detailed. The detailed parts do get a bit brittle after a few years.
I painted mine to give a more American 1950's idea.
They are mixed with 1:22.5 Preiser and Supply Online (SLM) figures in the photos

I had Schleich animals around the railway plus two characters in the BR80, one was the stable lad who was shovelling coal instead of organic substances, as he was bending over he glued straight into the cab. His rather more unfortunate colleague the driver was a big strong bloke standing straight (well he used to be a smithy), he had to undergo surgery. At the knees.
For the rest - and there were quite a few - I shelled out the extra for Preiser figures which I find more realistic and better finished than the other makes.

I collected a fairly sizable amount of Preiser figures about ten years ago. Prices have doubled since then.

I really like the composition of these pictures. The people look to have a purpose and are fully integrated into the scene.

Another batch of figures have been repainted to represent a private contractors workforce where "Health and Safety" is hardly taken notice of.

The locomotive crew look a little diminutive compared to the station staff.


Alongside a Lionel 1/24th scale figure. I'm sure that they will fit into many locomotives.

Nice. I like the track gang - not everyone models present day with dayglow uniforms. As for the 'vests' of the 80's, I have never seen a model.

I think this is most probably deliberate, and actually a good decision by the Bachmann figure designer; for whaetver reason, a number of G locos seem to have rather high cab floors (in some cases maybe to clear the drive mechanisms) and a "normal" scale height figure is simply too tall to fit or to look right. A good example is the Prehm zinc-cast HSB and RhB loco crews, which (although excellent figures) are really just a bit too tall for the cabs of some locos like the TL45 Mallet - I have two of them in my green 5902, but am seriously considering amputating their feet in order for them to look better in the cab!
These new Bachmann crew look like they are accurately proportioned from the waist up, but with quite short legs, and because of this I reckon that they will fit most loco cabs very well....

Thanks for those comparison pics of the Loco Crew. Have been thinking of some for my Locies since they were announced,but had concerns they might be too big as they are stated to be for 16mm Scale.

Jon, I believe that Bachmann have another set of loco crew figures which are 16mm scale. These haven't been released yet.
I have tried my figures in various LGB and Piko loco's, they fit in a treat and really look the part.

Thanks for that, so far as I can see on the Glendale Site some of the figures that you refer to are Ref. 22-176 through to 22-188 having recently been released. These being mostly the Generic Railway Workers and Hikers. The Orange Army are earlier numbers and were released a little while back. Looks like the 16mm ones are not here as yet, though I believe they are scheduled for early release. I will be looking for the G Scale Figures.

Nice new selection of figures.
Some are a little too modern for my line but they are all nicely made.

The shorter loco engineers will be just the ticket.....but I bet they will still need a leg removed to fit by the seat!
