Bachmann Devious Diesel becomes a Steamer!

Sometime back I ordered a devious diesel chassis from Bachmann USA to see if I could do something different with it. If I couldn’t find a suitable steam type then I thought it might be useful for a Victorian Great Northern 0–6-0 tender loco, some of which had outside rod steam powered chassis , with steam supplied from the engine.
Anyway, that didn’t happen and instead I set about building a loco based on the Mersey railways 0-6-4T locos, Cecil Raikes survives here in the UK and a sister loco exists in pretty poor shape in Australia.
They are interesting locos that started life on Liverpool’s underground railway that linked the city via a tunnel under the Mersey with Birkenhead. They had to be powerful because of the gradients and have condensing apparatus (like Met and District Rly steam locos) because of tunnel work etc.
As with most of my builds a start was made on the chassis with much plastic being removed with a power file to contour the outside frames to match the style of the prototype.
The body is mainly of styrene with s waste pipe for the boiler. The chimney is from Walsall models and the other castings are from GRS. A dome is on its way but will need a little reshaping. The cab roof and smoke box door are from a much reduced gas fire aluminium back sheet.
I used images from the interweb to create the model. I admit to cheating on the driving wheel spacing, but otherwise it’s proportions are close. It’s meant to be approx 1/24 (ish) to match my other models. There s quite a bit more work to do before it’s ready for painting.
I’m hoping to finish the model for the forthcoming Llangollen show where it should appear as part of my Crib Lane Loco shed layout.F919A8DC-CB46-4759-879B-7BDE0A57B5B2.jpeg1A63F7B4-1E1F-47CA-B798-B5FEBB49E0C6.jpeg
