I bet the motor itself works fine..

As for the wheels / pickups, and the drive-train...

That is why so many go battery. - Gets round the pickup problems.

I'm taking a punt that the problem won't be with the motor - and all of my purchases will ultimately end up as battery powered with radio control (CVP Airwire) or Fosworks radio control for live steam.

The Bachmann Mallet has a split LiIon battery pack (half in each side tank) with a battery management system sitting on top of the motherboard - Loksound 5XL decoder, Airwire receiver, charging socket, on/off switch and decoder programming plug all hidden in the bunker.

Runs all day on the battery - similar setup with the 3-truck Shay seen elsewhere on this Forum which ran for two days on the rolling road at an exhibition without recharging.




Currently working out how to fit radio control to the Bowande Falk as it becomes a bit of a rocket on the straights if the regulator is set to get the load around the tightest curves on the club track!

Fit a proportional servo to your regulator as well as the reverser. I am assuming the Falk uses piston valves (edit - apparently no, D/slide valves) and you are using the reverser alone to control the movement of the loco. On my piston valved Accucraft Lyn reverser control alone is sufficiant to get away without one. But some insist on both. I use Fosworks on my ESU equipped battery locos, bit faint hearted so NiMH batteries. Lovely big loco the 2-6-6-2. Max. P.S. This might be a useful link Bowande Falk review - Garden Railway Forum

Hi "Maxi-Model",

Servos will be Hi-Tec HS-82MG - one for the regulator and one for the reverser with a Fostek Omni FRx22R receiver (currently sitting at the work bench installing this combination into a 7/8" Decauville after a series of fixes - too many to go into here - look at the 32 odd pages of fixes for this loco on the 7/8" forum).

My Mallet got a decent work out in this video:

and my Roundhouse Davenport makes a couple of brief appearances on its first outing. The receiver in the Davenport died (not due to the rain as it was dry when removed) and whilst I was in Ray's workshop trying to establish what was wrong several persons (including the videographer) " shanghaied" my Mallet which is why it is seen pulling The Blues Train consist and my logging rolling stock is behind the Videographer's diesel..........

Not sure what sound files you are using but I'm running ESU's Mallet file (recorded from one of the Black Hills Central Mallets) with a different whistle file.

Hi all,

picked up the Bachmann 2-4-2 yesterday in between running around for other things and finally found time tonight to examine it.

Given I intend eventually to install battery power, DCC with sound and radio control I went straight to the motor block to see where the problem might have been....

Cut a long story short - connected power directly to the motor and it worked perfectly:




So I thought - maybe the motherboard? Hooked all that back up and back to no drive with power fed into it.

Then a light bulb moment (finally) - hooked the loom from the body back to the motherboard and did what I should have done in the first place.

Switched the three way switch in the smokebox from "Motor Off" to "NMRA" - it runs! (and in the other switch position - just not motor off!)

I had made the assumption there was something wrong with the loco given I was told several people had had a look at it and couldn't get it to run. Serves me right for not checking the obvious!!

Anyway - very happy as it appears like new (given I've now seen inside the gearbox) and apart from over-lubrication (possibly in an attempt to get it to run) it will make a nice engine once converted.



It will get a run at the next club day at AMRA Glen Iris before being put away in the line to be converted (there's a Climax, Heisler and Consolidation ahead of it).

NB: I'm pretty sure this gearbox block would not work with the first series - didn't have time to put the other unit on the workbench to pull it apart - but my first impression is that the gears and wheels on this version are light years away from the first model.

Even without close inspection, there appear to be several changes from the Mk I version. I think it unlikely that the motor blocks will be interchangeable .
