The 20% vat occurs on the fee not the auction item usually. This is actually one of the lowest fees I have seen around, Always slightly cheaper if you register direct with the auction house webiste than on the main platforms.

Buyers Premium: 18% + VAT (min. £1) per lot.

the key is always to set yourself a hammer figure plus around 25-28% extra and then delivery (allow 30 quid with this one) dont go any higher and dont randomly bid if not that interested !

If its a good lot, you will be competing against the Ebayers who stick a chunk on it and sell away on there.

these are quite cheap at this action (Buyers Premium: Antique Sale 18% + VAT (min. £1) per lot.) it all depends on if the item you want is wanted by others i guess and the bid is cheap in the first place.
