My fav on the list - LGB-BASED G SCALE (GAUGE 1) FFESTINIOG RAILWAY DOUBLE-FAIRLIE

View attachment 321275
Interesting selection, if I was in the market for anything my choice would be the LGB based Garret. Looks pretty good to me, plus there is a very good selection of IOM models, hm someone in here from Hertfordshire probably needs to look away now!

I had an LGB Garret once. A bit bigger than the ones in this auction.

The link by DickyC only searches for LGB locos. There are 3 pages of Gauge-1 stuff, in everything fro 1:20 thru 1:32 scale.

Lot 616 onward.

Some very curious 'estimates' by my US standards. These Bachmann 4-4-0s sell like hot cakes, especially the Eureka & Palisades version as the prototype still runs. My estimate $500+
Bachmann G Gauge Eureka & Palisades 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive, Spectrum 81396 brown & black locomoti

And another - Accucraft N&W coaches sell for 200GBP according to a post a few years ago.
Four Accucraft Gauge 1 Norfolk and Western maroon Coaches, Baggage Car, Passenger Cars (2) and Sl

And I also had a real problem with the auction calling all the Gauge-1 stuff "10mm scale". I could go on . .

Fortunately I have a sister-in-law in the UK and we'll be visiting next year. What do I want from all this?

Sorry yes, Im an LGB purist, often lots of other lovely ites in and around the same area,

REf the Bachman, these hardly ever sell for anything over £140 to £180, i guess the US market is not as popular over here, we should start a business together sending them back across the pond. If you need any help if you bid/purchase this or any other let me know.

There's an Accucraft GS4 "Daylight" 4-8-4 and a set of 6 coaches in original boxes, with very low estimates. I guess the G1MRA crowd don't read these things or don't run US trains!

sending them back across the pond.
I'll bear that in mind. The VAT, cash-only, and 20% BP are a bit off-putting.

Why VAT on auction sales of used items?

That is as near as can be to 40% add on to the Hammer price, well worth remembering this if bidding. It is easy to get carried away in an auction with something that you really desire that someone else also does.

I am always remembering that. There was a recent auction that I got involved with (Thanks, DickyC,) also the Saleroom, here in the USA. Mostly an estate of real loco parts - GWR number plates etc. ("Duchess of Atholl" nameplate went for $13,000 - someone who remembered his Hornby-Dublo days?)

Anyway, my pal wanted an LGB track cleaner, and there was one in a lot of 8 LGB locos (and an empty box!) I calculated at $500, the BP and fees would be 30% (=$650) and shipping would be at least $150 for a total of $800. Resale price for all that lot might be about $1,000, with an allowance of $200 for the track cleaner, so he'd get his for less than the eBay price of $250-$350.

Leonard Lot 505 track cleaner sm.jpg

I won this for $550, [never go above your preset limit, :( ] and the invoice I just got was $714, which included a 3.75% credit card fee. I just got the shipping estimate of $200. Holy Mackerel, as the saying goes! Let's hope we can at least get our money back.

As a matter of interest, which of those (besides the track cleaner) is considered valuable in the UK?

One can do similar math on the Bachmann 4-4-0 in this latest auction, which they estimate at 180-200GBP. That's <=$254, which is pretty good compared with the recent eBay sale of the same loco, new-in-box, for $845.

But add the 20% (=$51 +VAT = $51+$10 ) for a total of $315 out of the auctioneer's door. Shipping? In my experience, at least 100 GBP, so another $125. No customs duty in the US on cheap/toy/gift items [up to $10,000] so I'm out $440. At least it has the original box, so I can sell it for $500-$600. (Despite that one at $845, most do not sell for that. MSRP was only $650. There are 2 'pre-owned' 4-4-0s on eBay.com right now for $499 and $629.) Not much profit to split with DickyC, who puts up the cash to buy it (maybe.)

Sometimes auctions do work out. There was a local auction house who said "no shipping", which put off quite a few potential buyers. My pal and I figured a nice drive to Lewes and lunch, plus picking up our spoils - what's not to like? I bought 3 freights, new-in-box, for $23, and a Kalamazoo "Empire Set" with the 4-4-0 and 2 more freights in good condition and all with original boxes. Total cost was $65. I sold the 4-4-0 for $85, and the freights for about $20 each, so the Train Fund got a little good news.

I would say items 2 and 4 (on the middle row) - 3rd one less so, and the first two on the bottom row?

The middle row tractors, always seem to go for a premium price..
As do any of the Feldbahn loco's..
The tram loco also seems quite popular.

Others may disagree?

Tram locs always popular as you say Phil, but price wise I would reckon £200 a bit more than average. Though some can go on EBay for much more.

I posted about it for my Live Steam pals on MLS. One commented that it was 30% + VAT, so I read the small print.

Curious, that the item descriptions say 30% incl VAT, the T&Cs say "Buyers Premium: 20% + VAT " but then under article 4, it says "and a premium of 25% of the hammer price will be charged for all bidding online via the-saleroom.com".

Probably best to go with the 30% incl VAT.

I thought this Receipt from UPS, the shipper, might amuse (or frighten) anyone contemplating buying by auction.

What is really irritating is that the auction said they have an inhouse shipping service but this lot wasn't applicable. They recommended a shipper and told me the shipper didn't charge for pick-up of the lot from the auction house. Yeah, right. That shipper knows they have you over a barrel. The actual shipping cost is $76 - less than half the charges.

Ouch ! Yes i got caught with a puchase up in scotland where they didnt have an inhouse shipping department either ! But I thought £40 was excessive then The Auction house recomended several local companies and i went with the most local. The chap said that if i could "wait" till he had a few other order from the auction to come in he could collect "all together" rather than charge an individual collection charge and that saved me £30. ! There is a company called Mailboxes and are world wide, they ship this kind of stuff all the time. Homepage - MBE Worldwide

I printed my 'watch list', which was just to track prices of typical USA models in the UK. You guys were right about the Bachmann 4-4-0 and 2-6-0s. But at those fees plus shipping they weren't worth chasing.

At least one Accucraft 'Light Mikado' live steamer didn't even get a bid! The rest were around auction pre-estimates and I didn't see anything in my watch list worth getting excited about. My pals over here were curious about the C&O Alleghany, and that went above estimate at 6,000GBP.

Ah well, keep them coming Richard.

these lovely selection of LGB scratch builds
There's a comment somewhere that they were made by the guy at GRS. [Though there were a lot of them, so I don't know how he'd have time to build them and run a shop!] And they do look nice in the photos.

I had 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garrett that I foolishly bought from a guy in the UK (couldn't sell it in the USA when I got fed up of it: no-one knew what it was.) Same kind of construction - the power was a pair of LGB 2085 trucks.
