We hope, some day in the future to get over to the States and use Amtrack for our proposed itinery. Maybe spend three weeks or so travelling by rail, seeing some of the preserved lines (Cumbres, Durango of course and some others.) I will investigate the option, if there is one, of an Amtrak 'open' ticket for travel across the States during a three week period.

Mike if you are over in the states let me know. You are always welcome to visit the KMRR.

We've just done a long Amtrak trip - see my report under Full Size Railways.
Amtrak does have 'passes', but they have a great website (www.amtrak.com) to buy multi city trips. They are quite cheap too. Just start putting some possible itineraries in and check the prices.
