I have a USA Trains F3A which has a Sound Traxx Sierra sound unit fitted , i'm looking at adding another F3A unit so that i can run them as a pair i was just wondering if it's possible to add sound to the second unit by just adding a speaker and wiring it up to the other speaker ?? Has any bodie else tried this and how would it sound ??

Re:Adding sound to a second loco

In short yes.
For best results use a pair of identical speakers of minimum 8 ohms impedance wired in parallel with + to + and - to - as per diagram.
Using lower impedance speakers or more than two 8 ohm in parallel may damage the sound card.

I did it with a USAT Cow and calf. Works well enough for me.
I used one of the "El Cheapo" MRC sound boards.

Re:Adding sound to a second loco

I think Sierra specifically state to use only 8 ohms. I don't think the pcb can handle 4 ohms.

Re:Adding sound to a second loco

Now if you add an extra sound card as well as the speaker in the second unit, you will get sounds running slightly out of sync with each other. Costs a bit but I bet it sounds great.
FYI. Massoth also say only 8 ohms.

Many thanks chaps for all your helpful advice the wiring diagram is a big help Neil
Will look out for a 8 ohms speaker and some wiring connectors to go from one loco to the other .

Re:Adding sound to a second loco

Will two 8 ohms in parrallel not give a resistance of 4ohms?
that will double the output current and possibly cause damage,
should it not be two 16 ohms in parallel?
Ohms law , R = V/I
