Hi Keith
I think the loco is based on the KLOSE system I read about it years ago in an LGB Depesche magazine the article was titled 'Kennen Sie Klose'
I will google and see what it comes up with!!
Steve

Thanks Steve It is a system I had never even heard of previously.

I believe it has inside cylinders but outside valve gear, which is what the odd circular housings are.
As Steve says, it looks an enormously overcomplicated mechanism from a design standpoint - you might almost say "KLOSE - but no coconut!"...... :rolf:

Accucraft have been making these Saxon locos for several years now, they also do a lovely 0-10-0 (a VIK?) and a live-steam 1K. There are also a very few ELECTRIC conversions of these done (I think) by a third-party German dealer, though I've never actually seen one offered for sale.

... really looks odd - similar ones of that type were still in service in the late 60ies/early 70ies on the former Yugoslavian narrow gauge network - here one in Sarajevo (image source: Wikipedia)

The network used to operate even a 'stretched' limo eh loco of that type:

The main reason for the fairly complex valve gear was apparently to allow the coupled wheels of the loco to swivel as it followed tight bends - hence the distance between the wheels effectively shortened on the inside of the bends and vice versa. The valve gear basically compensated the shortening and lengthening of the wheel distance.

This website explains it more in detail:

Well that link and the other descriptions are a revelation. Loco types I had never even dreamed of.
Thanks.
