A little night running on Beaver Creek

As the extended testing went onto into the darkness I got a chance to do a few night shots. I was testing the newly motorised stock cars in a rake of other stock cars behind a single Annie up and down the steep gradients of my layout. And to the risk left them running while I had my supper. No problems when I returned so here are just a few of the shots.
On part of the layout there are halogens or LED lights for general illumination, but on others there are just the lights from the layout buildings. Point Rock has not yet had the buildings lighting completed and connected.
Getting settings correct for balancing bright light against small building lights and close reflectionn against dimmer farher objscts sets up an interesting challenge and sometimes it is just downright impossible.
The colour of light from LEDs is so much cooler than from halogen or little tungsten lamps as can be seen in the stockyard piccy

The loco passes a very bright halogen!

Mixing LED and halogen and tungsten gives a strange brew at the Point Rock stockyard. Notice that the stock car is missing and the cows are not stampeding off the ramp!!!

The Point Rock saw mill carries on working into the darkness as there are plenty of orders on.
I have got to finish putting in the bulding lights and connect them up in this area

Re:A little night running

Most impressive!!!! I found warm white LEDS have a more "incandescent" colour.

Re:A little night running

Yes the warm white ones are better but unfortunately the LED garden spotlights that I have only came in cool white...not many sealed garden stuff comes with warm LEDS unless you buy the expensive ones...I'm tight and will wait till they come down in price!

I will be using individual warm white LEDs bulbs for the interiors some of the Point Rock buildings

That last pic is a cracker Mike - looks so life-like:thumbup:

Re:A little night running

Hi Mick
Many thanks for the kind comment
I hope to do some more tonight but not sure about the weather. I think I will use some passenger kit this time to get more illumination from the train itself. The little Annie is not easy to make out in the last piccy as she only has her headlight (must put a cab light inside her sometime).
I could of course get out some tungsten photo lamps to illuminate it all but I do like the 'station' illumination's effect.

Re:A little night running

Stunning stuff, very clever use of light - shades of O Winston Link but in minature.

Max.

Re:A little night running

love the nightime shots, ozz atmoispher!

Re:A little night running

Fantastic pics Mike very nice lighting effects round your wood yard and station

Re:A little night running

Thank Richie
Did not have time to get out tonight but maybe tomorrow to take more with passenger stock running.
I have to fit lights inside the Pointrock buildings including the Sawmill. I have all the feeds in situ and will be using warm white led bulbs fed from the lighting circuit. Also more lights for Arbour Summit.

Re:A little night running

Great stuff! In my recent night pics I was using only available light -- moonlight, structure lights, and train headlights -- in an attempt at a "natural" look, with mixed results. Next time I want to try using some additional lighting.

Hi Ray

The last 2 shots in post 10 ( the one of the Beavercreek station shelter and the one of the streetcar with the coal tower) were just using available light with the buildings/loco lights only. The rest of the shots in post 1 and in 10 were using a mix of garden halogens (one with LED garden spotlight) and the light from buildings, loco etc

A couple more off the reel

Re:A little night running

Been asked a couple of times in pms about how to get photos at twilight that have a decent depth of field and do not overexpose lights etc.

You really have to have a manual option on the camera so that you can set the aperture, ISO exposure time etc.
I used F20 in the last two piccies in the thread.
Then boost up the ISO setting to 800 or 1600 if your camera gives acceptable grain in the photos at this setting (some cameras will also have 3200 but this can be veeerrryy grainy)
The shots in the last two piccies were hand held (with image stabilisation mode well in gear) but if you have a tripod at hand then even better.
To get the best exposure take a few shots and change the exposure compensation (if you have it) on the camera by one notch each time

At these settings get a sharp shot of anything moving and still having everything else scenery wise well exposed, including the lights, is a nightmare to balance. Of couse if you are wanting to achieve a blurred motion effect of the train with sharp scenery then go for it.

If you have a DCC layout you can have the lco/passenger lights on and the train staitonary. If you have analogue and use Train Engineer you can use PWC setting on the receiver and the train will light but at low throttle setting will not move (well most locos). If it moves slightly just add some resistance like a weight or a choc for a wheel to stop it

Thses are the methods that I use but this is by no way an exhaustive list of methods. It is just fun to muck about and have happy accidents

After the open day was over (Sun 22 July) had a relaxed meal outside, sunk a couple of frothy coffees (beer) and did a little night running.

As the light completely faded and the moon came out to show its face I tried to get some atmospheric shots ....

The 'Californian Zephyr' was running and although in places there was only the light from the buildings as I was obscuring the moon (put a lot of weight on recently), the camera still manged to get something, if a bit grainy...

It was late night at the diner but a cop needs to get his refreshment and of course there are always a chick or two to pass one's eyes over...
Not even the thundering sound of the approaching 'Zephyr' distracts his attention...
