I have not been around for ages but not been idle on the model front, a reefer and box car completed and now work in progress on this one. The original plan was to put together a center drop heavy braced car but while looking on the net for some ideas I came across the D&RGW drop bottom cars and thought then to build a car to my own design based on this car.
First job was to modify the Bachmann chassis as was too wide to allow for the doors to open so the razor saw took off the outer sections and the truss rods moved inwards, the floor was to be raised also which meant all the brake gear and so on was left in mid air so the space taken up with styrene rod,,drop door stops would have to go on later. Once the chassis work was done I felt the center flat section of the floor was still too wide so I came up with an apex floor section to aid unloading when the doors are dropped and a cross section across the center of the car as the doors would be at each end. The body is in two sections with the board joint in the center of the car as the styrene sheet was not long enough for the whole side and I didn`t want the join at one end.
The door mechanism using brass rod and chain and the ratchet handles made up from strip and rod,
Jobs still to do, steps, brake wheel assembly, finish off the end beams(D&RG cars had flat ends)cut bars, some more extra uprights to strengthen the frame, more nuts bolts and rivets to go on in a couple of places as some small details need bolting on, some more board gaps on the worn out body and of course paint and lettering !!!! A few pics of the car so far.IMG_20221002_182343.jpgIMG_20221002_182357.jpgIMG_20221002_182441.jpgIMG_20221002_182559.jpgIMG_20221002_183036.jpgIMG_20221002_182500.jpg

Thanks David, bolt, rivet details are from Cambrian Models, about £3 a bag, very quick mail order service and can recommend and I had a new batch delivered this morning, ordered on Friday. I used their signal support brackets for the balcony on my saloon rebuild,A limited but handy range of detail parts,
I hope this helps;)

I use Cambrian rivets and bolt heads and can also recommend them. Rio makes superb jobs of scratch building wagons, the rivets and bolts really bring his inspiring creations to life.

Question now is, do you paint the wagon or leave bare so folk can appreciate the work that's gone in to the model ???

Good question. I sometimes think it's a shame to cover up your handy work, espif it's a nice shiny brass built loco

A good paint with a little subtle dry brushing over the detail will bring it all back out.

Hi Rio
Now that is a fine build/ kitbash.
I have a rare ‘Three-Foot Classic Models’ drop bottom gondola made from wood plastic and brass. Unlike the AMS (Accucraft) one, the drop bottom doors and chain linkage all work.
It is an amazing model but needs great care when moving it about or using the opening mechanism.
Your interpretation looks very sweet indeed. A real achievement… and a lot cheaper too!
Here’s the only link that I have found to another one of the 3foot jobbies..

I finished off the build at least the modeling, end beams, brake wheel and the steps added but had to put spacers against the car sides so the door irons would miss as they dropped, few bits also had some bolt molding added to "fix" them onto the car and now first coat paint onto the outside only so far as not sure what to do with the inside colour, I read the D&RG did not paint the inners but left plain wood, still deciding.few pics of work so far.IMG_20221006_112223.jpgIMG_20221006_112612.jpgIMG_20221006_112730.jpgIMG_20221006_112742.jpg

Car now ready for lettering, coat of brown for the inside , then light grey and while the grey still wet the body coat blended in, then dry brush circular motion of black to give coal dust effect, some of the wide outer body lines had a black wash added and a body coat wash over these to blend back a little, sorry pics a little dark ;)IMG_20221008_152639.jpgIMG_20221008_152524.jpgIMG_20221008_152507.jpgIMG_20221008_152817.jpg

I`m calling this one done, The lettering applied and I decided to break it onto two boards instead of just putting on the side so they matched the damaged boards on the car body, A matt varnish the on the whole car and a coat of mixed matt varnish, black and body colour wash over the car to fade back the lettering just to age a little, I suppose I will have to find something else to do now?IMG_20221009_134118.jpgIMG_20221009_134049.jpgIMG_20221009_134033.jpgIMG_20221009_133630.jpgIMG_20221009_133705.jpgIMG_20221009_133652.jpg

If you don't have a follow on project I'm surprised you haven't considered a second one of these, should be simple now you've built one already

I'm lost for words though, swaery word alert, its bloody beautiful.
