A British Locomotive?

Too much of a good thing is nearly enough.

As there are no suitable British looking engines available off the shelf, and I wanted a 1950s Diesel to haul BR Bauxite wagons alongside the branch line steamers, the fictional Class 18 has been born.  D8245 is basically a GP7 with most of the American adornments removed which gives a look very similar to the real Class 15 and Class 16 locomotives of the period. It works for me anyway.

This was the same locomotive running last year in its full USA colours.  Quite a transformation

That looks very plausible!

If certainly captures the spirit of that period, I like it alot :D

I will get some more photos once the rain stops Dan!
However I have already repainted a NW2 into my fleet livery, which does have a GWR feel having been suitably Anglicised.
I think a BR Green one would look good. Great idea

She is trundling off one of the branches with a short train of four wheel trucks in tow
Looks very Mid-1950s England to me

A USAT s4 with a lowered cab might look a bit like a class 20. I reckon a lowered cab would make it about the right height for a uk loco as well as look more like a class 20

There are two s4s in this photo the blue one and the UP one

I have been so pleased with the British look of the repainted locopmotives this summer that a real work of fiction is now in the pipeline and a Dash9 is going to get British Railways green.  First all the railings are other large USA style fittings were removed and then the bodywork sanded to take off the lettering and stripes

This the result after just one coat of BR green paint and a small warning panel applied. I think it will look superb when finished in early 2015.  Now I just need to find some passenger stock that the loco will not dwarf and paint it into Blood and Custard!

Great. nice to see a bit of imagination going on. I like the straight forward conversions.

The transfers are from `Fox Transfers` and can be bought on-line. They are listed as `Gauge 1` and the BR insignia comes in two sizes, and with both left and right facing Lions eating the bicycle wheel, all on one sheet.  The smaller version is ideal for shunting engines like this ex-Ruschbahn loco, previously the Millessee station pilot, and now being utilised by the Pakefield PW Dept to deal with lineside vegetation and other general duties.  The stock numbers are on a seperate sheet and give `E` and `D` options, again as can be seen on E718 here.

thats looks brilliant.. nice repaint.. ???

Now dont get me started on NCB stuff, that had already crossed my mind!  However as I couldnt get any `proper` British Railways locomotives for the garden I decided to just go down the totally fictional route instead and just have the livery.  I had aquired some of the Ruschbahn locomotives but they didnt seem to fit in with my mainly USA stock, and I didnt want the huge expense of buying Swiss stock for them, so they are now appearing in BR Green....and the old passenger stock is now BR maroon too.  Here are the before and after photos.
(Before anyone mentions it I did once put up overhead wiring, but the local cats, hedgehogs and occassional fox soon took it down again)
