It's typical isn't it, my 1 amp controllerers weren't up to the job outside so I looked around for 5 amp controllers only to find gaugemaster had discontinued theirs. So I bought the 2.5 amp version and hoped it would do, and it does for single motored locos but twin motored locos soon have the cutout tripping much to my chagrin.
Now of course, scanning ebay (as one does) I find that Gaugemaster have reintroduced the 5 amp controller in a new and improved form.
Question is do I buy one or two or sell the twin motored locos?

It's an ebay link as twojags is cheaper than r.r.p.

I would look at Helmsman's as well as Gaugemaster.

I heard that the 5A Gaugemasters had problems, so until I was sure that these had been resolved with the new version, I'd look at the Helmsman with its lifetime guarantee....
 
Gaugemaster also have a lifetime guarantee, in fact one of mine went pop and they repaired it for free :thumbup:

I notice there's a used Helmsman 4.5 amp unit gone on ebay from Rails of Sheffield. Might be worth a punt? item 130545167552
 
I have a Gaugemaster that has had a lot of use. it developed a small problem of not going fully off when turned down to zero. phoned them up not having the reciept expecting the whole big story and there service was fantastic posted it back and had it back and working in a week no charge life time gaurantee GREAT. Also used twojags before and again great service from him.

My only experience of gauge master 5amp unit was that it could not power a gp38 which only draws about 2amps. I have others say the same. I recently bought a helmsman and it does it's job well.
 
Helmsman is a lifetime guarantee, but I do know someone who had to return three of them in a row down to various faults, they were all replaced quickly and the fourth one has been working about two years now with no problems whatsoever. Helmsman will make a 10amp version if you ask them but the price is a bit steep.
 
Glendale have 5 Amp transformers and throtles in the second hand section.
£100 for the transformer
£50 for the control side
Then if you ever move to the dark side you are halfway there:thumbup:
