I don't see any moral dilemma in ending a BIN early, it's no different to something being on the shelf in a shop - someone else could buy it, or the shopkeeper could take it off the shelf, it doesn't matter how many times you've been in the shop to look at it. On the other hand, I don't end auctions early; I have often declined to convert to a BIN mid-auction when requested.
Totally agree with how you deal with the two types of eBay listings, have done it that way myself for years. A new reason has arisen for ending BINs early which is eBay's automatic relisting once the 30 day duration has finished. I am regularly sent offers from eBay for £1.00 maximum fee for a 2,3 or 4 day period so use that to list any item I have priced over £10.00. If a £100.00 item sells I get charged £1.00 but if it doesn't sell and gets automatically relisted and then sells I get charged £10.00. Any BIN listing I have over £10.00 gets withdrawn after 29 days and then relisted when the next offer comes around.
