3D printer kit

I'd give it a miss at any price. Does not have the "resolution' in the XY axis to print anything but maybe Objet d' Art... But for serious 3D printing its not going to do the job...

Try the area above Rik. It's still there. ;D ;D ;D

That's really interesting, I'm always thinking about ways to build new custom detail parts and this is an exciting thought. What kind of resolution and machine would you need to produce small detail parts for for 1:29th diesels or cars for example? eg: light casings, brake detail, etc?

The reason I ask is I'm currently messing about with Sketchup to create 3D models and plans, so something like this would be great if I could turn these into masters of my drawings. I had thought about maybe using Shapeways to produce the parts, but I would like to try and experiment with it myself!

This all just a thought as I don't really have the cash for this kit at the moment, but it's an interesting idea for the future!

Thanks, G

If you are buying any one of the currently available domestic models you are probably going to have to do a lot of finishing. Beware of "samples" that you may be shown. These have usually been soaked in acetone, which removes the layer lines but also removes fine detail.

Shapeways and iMaterialise are decent enough for small runs of custom detail parts - and in large scale you'd get away with the nylon WSF (polished) which is pretty cost effective. I'd considered doing the chassis and bonnet structure of a diesel project I have in mind in 3D print, with an etched brass cab - like I'm doing in 009 for a Faur L18H with Narrow Planet, but obviously with thicker materials... the G scale diesel project idea is a Lyd2 by the way.

Not much use to me 'til they can print in cast iron, steel and brass I'm afraid.

Looks really interesting, James. Though I've just tried to view your blog on my Android tablet and it went haywire. Is that a problem with my tablet or with Blogger? I know sometimes my own blog throws a wobbly when I try accessing it with my tablet so maybe it' just an Android issue.

Ahhhhhh well my research discovered a chap printing with stainless steel "dust" in an adhesive matrix, This is then fused using just enough heat to bond the particles together so you end up with a "sintered" metal part. This is then immersed in a pot of molten bronze which wicks through the sinter, withdrawn and allowed to cool....

I would go with lost wax casting if I wanted cast metal parts, but this is a very novel process.... I'll have to dig out the URL, I'm sure you will all want to try it....

Does it work with mixed-dried-fruit and cake-mix??
Then we would be really interested! - Sintered fruit-cake!!
;) ;D

I wonder whether this could be scaled up to G scale:

In a word YES! Printing 3D is scaleable the same as printing photos...

I see that Dremel are about to release a 3D printer......

And there is this one too with dual extruders; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-3D-printer-dual-extruder-New-Extruder-Dual-nozzle-W-Abs-or-Pla-Spools-/351167024184?pt=AU_PRINTERS&hash=item51c32f8c38

Oh good! I didn't think of that. I should be able to pick one up for 1/2 price on Trademe soon. :D
