Has anyone converted an older whistle and bell sound that used a8 to 10" rail that you put in between the rails to activate the sound to the newer magnet type?

Presumably, a plunger switch on the loco? - It should not be difficult.. Just a reed switch under the loco (watch clearance!) wired across the plunger switch.

I appreciate the suggestion but with the plunger type, the duration of the whistle is determined by the length of the rail pushing up on it and closing the circuit, if I go to a reed switch which would activate the whistle but only for an instant resulting it a very short toot, I was wondering if perhaps installing a capacitor in the circuit would solve the problem, Bill

There *may* already be something built into the electronics for this? - I suggest you try a short push of the plunger, and see if it does give you a longer whistle..

The problem with a capacitor is it takes a finite time to charge-up, so may not 'grab' enough charge to do the job.. There is a way of doing this with a little electronics (called a monostable) this would hold the whistle 'on' for a preset time. It would require experiment to get the right value of components though.

Well I appreciate your input, learn something new everyday, haven't tested yet but pretty sure it only sounds for the duration of contact, thanks for the heads up in the "momostable", I might be old but still trainable, LOL Bill
