1920 Saxon coach build

One cold March day at home I was at a bit of a loose end and was looking at my LGB stock and wondering about how I could make something a little different. I have quite a bit of German Saxon themed stock including 6 bogie coaches and 3 x IVk loco's and a IK (wonky) loco. Then I thought about something historic, can I make something to run as an historic coach. About the same time Wayne Haste (off this forum) posted some pictures of some builds of stock that he had completed and they looked great, this really inspired me to have a go.
So a rather nice LGB coach was selected

and within 5 minutes it looked like this

And this is the bit I intended to replace, so after some careful measuring and head scratching I started to mark out some foamboard that I had spare.

Window's were drawn and cut, I've quickly found out that when using a sharp knife, it pays to keep your fingers out of the way. Also its more accurate not to try and cut through in one cut but to do several lighter cuts until you get through.P1040231.JPG
Wooden panelling was scribed on using a flat bladed screwdriver at 5mm intervals. After cutting out the ends and the other side and floor, then construction commenced. Weights were used whilst the glue went off.P1040223.JPG
After a few days the body was looking like it should do and a trial dry run was done.P1040232.JPG

Thanks Steve, that's brilliant, looking forward to the continuation of this thread..... I didn't realise you used a genuine LGB coach as the basis for it, had just assumed it was a "Naughty Newqida" cheapie..... ;)

One question, what thickness of foamboard did you use for the coach sides?

Jon.

It's a LOT cheaper to carve up a Newqida passenger coach - I did two, converting them to MáV narrow gauge to match my converted diesel...

Many, but they are all too big to post here, as I just discovered.

I wrote an article for a well-known UK garden rail magazine a while back. And yes it WAS published. If you PM me with an email I can send you all the pics you could possibly want....all the seats were rebuilt with slats - 288 of them, the interior was totally made-over with maps, posters and handrails - new wheel-sets and couplings and balcony floors, too.

Apologies for hi-jacking.

You should be able to post copies of the pics here by simply re-sizing them, Tac - I think (from memory) that they have to be reduced to under a 300MB file size.....
Maybe best to start your own thread for this, rather than we intrude any more on Steve's!
I'm sure a lot of folks here would like to see the pics, not just me......

If your article was in "Garden Rail", then which issue number please, and I can have a look back?

Jon.

Very nice Steve. A quality conversion.

Okay back to the coach build, to be honest I didn't think Id get this far or if it would work at all, but its slowly looking like I wanted it to and although I have made the body 2mm too long it ment I will have to trim the chassis to get it to fit correctly. It was at this point that a decision was made to purchase one of them Nequida coaches for the soul purpose of this build. So brand new for £30 (inc delivery) this arrived

and within less than 5 mins of being out the box it looked like this

The LGB coach was rebuilt and is now back in service.

Seating was also used from the Nq coach, this had to be cut up to fit in, I added a centre partition wall the strengthen the coach sides as they were bending in, in the centre.
From the photo below you can see how I strengthen up the joints by adding L shaped plastercard strips to the walls and flooring, this foamboard is good stuff but gluing an end of it doesn't work so well (i think the glue soaks into the cut ends)

Trial fit on the new cut out chassis, fits well

3mm Jon, or there abouts

So to the roof. This is made from the Nq roof with two clerestory pieces taken from LGB set coaches

The roof was marked out and drilled
P1040239.JPG
and the clerestory bits were fastned together after trimming off the lips on the ends

hen the clerestory bit was lined up and screwed on from underneath

And so to the paint shop (well a large cardboard box in me garage) were the whole coach was premiered using Wilko's grey primer and then a top coat of RAL 8003 Clay Brown, transfers were supplied by Troeger-2m and the whole coach was sprayed with Humbrel Satin laquer, which has given it a nice finnish.
Oh, I forgot to mention the window frames, did them out of thin strips of plaster card for the sides and some 2mm L shape for the tops, this covers the thickness of the Perspex.
