Windows Photo Viewer in Win X

Having upgraded(?) to Win X you may lament the seeming passing of the very old and extremely workable Windows Photo Viewer. The new one is far from friendly.

You may be pleased (like me), to know it is still there. If you right-click the photo and 'open with', it is there in the list, however there seems no way to make it the default option, as I always had it.

If you then,

Left click <start>, <settings> , <system>, <default apps>, and there is WPV, just click!

What will happen when the next load of updates come in, who knows, it may not even be there anymore, or it may need to be reset again?

it won't be deleted, windows 10 just changes the default programs IF YOU NEGLECT TO STOP IT!

There is a page during the installation that says "select default programs".... on that page there is a "leave everything as it was" selection, bottom left corner.

You should select all the customize options when updating... you can turn off a lot of the junk right away.

Greg, that's my main problem with 'Gate's mates', they can't leave anything alone. If I have a default setting on MY P.C.it is most likely the one that I want. They have no business altering that, ever!

Well, after the anniversary update I was expecting all sorts of things to go wrong, but the only thing that I've found so far is that the 'new' photo viewer that arrived with WX has disappeared. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

MIND? I'm cheering!!! It was a right R.P.I.T.A as even though removed as 'default' it still insisted on opening every time I plugged a camera in.

It can be replaced by the old Photo Viewer and removed entirely.

I'll try and find the instructions I have for doing that.

The default photo viewer is pathetic it take over 10 seconds to load a photo, I use office photo viewer

What a day I've had with WX. I could avoid no longer the current major upgrade(?), but that was after I'd started working on some photos and a banner repeatedly popped up across what I was working on, saying 'Restart required for update' and me telling it to sod off each time. Eventually I relented and in a quiet time allowed it to restart. After a serious amount of time (1/2 hour?) Mr Gates eventually allowed me to start using my computer again.

I then remembered the photo problem that started this thread (that's a minor miracle), and the major upgrade has changed things again. This time I got an option box on trying to open the first photo and one of the options was for Windows Photo Viewer, with a default box to tick. All checked and now seems to be Ok.

The new upgrade has also, without leave, removed all the old M.S. games (again). I've since had at least four more restart requests banners during the day. This is totally out of order in my book, Gates and Mates need to sort that one, it goes beyond 'reasonable' into completely unacceptable. Once per day is more than enough!

Guys,

Thank you for this. I have just followed the directions at the top, as I too had been having serious trouble since the Windows 10 thing.

Sadly I still can't post images. I have tried to edit the Bachmann Annie and Clarabell interiors post to finally upload the full image I wanted. I go through the select, upload, full bit and it comes up with text similar to:

'attachfull12345'. (no image at all) Any ideas what Mr Gates has messed up for me?

I get that frustrating message sometimes. Extrapolating from pre WX (when things worked) I have come to the conclusion that there is a problem with the picture format and editing.

If I edit a photo using MS Picture Manager and do anything other than Auto Correct, it will go through all the Upload motions like you say but there will be no image! However, if I convert that 'edited' pic from a jpeg to a png, it will load up (providing the file size - which seems to double during the jpeg to png conversion - is within the parameters set for this site).

Again, my mind thinking of cause and effect, I think that this site might be the cause of some of the problems but wouldn't know for certain.

My other thoughts are that MS is rather Orwellian, tinged with Soylent Green!

MS Picture-it Photo 7 worked really well and was far easier to use than any of the current MS offerings or, indeed, other proprietory programs. But of course, even though my son found a driver so that the prog would work on WX, MS gradually made it unworkable.

James, check the file size of the photo you're trying to upload, it may not be reduced enough. I use PixResizer which has an option box for a stated size of 600x450 that always works (famous last words, I haven't tried it later today). The photo put up this morning was reduced from 8.7 MB down to 60 KB, way small enough and some.

Bob. My experience, which may be different to James's, is that pics well within the size parameters fail and I get the same results as James. If the pic is too large there is a slightly different response shown.

It is becoming a perennial problem for me - even with resizing! I have no problem with sending pics to other recipients/sites.

You have neatly summed up the issue! Thank you.

Yes the file size of that last one was around 60kb. I reduce them all.

Unless a cure is found it will be text only for me from now on !

That's definitely a problem. Have you tried with different browsers? I have a couple of sites that have been happy with I.E. for years and suddenly don't want to know until I open them in Firefox. I have no idea why, they just do.

Is there any clue in the failure message that's returned?

I have used the upload this morning with a freshly reduced pair of pics and it has worked fine.

04.06.17. - Knockranny Horse Show - Tortoise.JPG - This is a jpeg taken less than two weeks ago. The Thumbnail shows as does Full Image. Clicking on Full Image shows as 'attachFull224332'. (now just showing as 'att' as I pressed the key to start another paragraph).

This is the same pic converted to PNG and reduced in size as PNGs (so I'm informed) retain all the previous info as well as the new file details). It came to well over 1Mb and, even now is 783Kb as opposed to the jpeg which is 227Kb.

And even that hasn't worked! Edit; - well it shows as a thumbnail. Further Edit; the two dates are the day I took the photo.:banghead:

Mick I can see the PNG thumbnail underneath as "attached files" and can open it. There are also spaces the size of the full sized pics, as though they were there.

There is only one other thing as infuriating as a computer that wont do as asked . . . !! The other doesn't have settings, only upsettings.

I'm surprised it gave the file names - I just wish I knew what the problem was.
Yes, upsettings!

Mick, most posts with pics don't show (to me) the thumbnails underneath or the filenames (attached files). Is it possibly a setting somewhere that needs altering. I'm no expert, except at 'clicking' and hoping (or is that praying).
