Where's Thomas?

Great video; I must follow up and watch the earlier ones. I had some of the first Thomas books, i.e. first editions, when I was a child. I quite clearly remember reading about Henry being bricked up in the tunnel and can still see the picture in my mind of it. Plus Thomas and the troublesome trucks, Gordon the Big Engine (and rather bad-tempered too, so with Gordon as a name I took some stick over that!). But the tram I'm sure didn't feature in any of the books I had.

Pleased you liked the video. There is only one other Thomas video from the Sandwell Valley Railway, Thomas and Scruffey.
Toby the Tram Engine and his coach Henrietta first appeared in book 7 first published in 1952 and called Toby the Tram Engine.
Perhaps you had grown out of Thomas by then? Unfortunately I never did!

Ah, yes, I've seen the other video and enjoyed it too. They are both capture the "air" of the original stories I think.

In 1952, I would have been 8 and I can remember going into hospital for a sinus operation and I think I had a Thomas book with me. I certainly had a metal, non-motorised green tank engine about 00 scale with me.

hi Keith
Chris and my self have just watched your second video and a good laugh it brought back lots of memories for me ,and of course we have Thomas and Percy for the Grandkids( who am I kidding? ) Thomas has done so much for our hobby I wish I could afford to get James for the boys but like everybody else we have to save the pennies but they still enjoy all the other locos in my collection.

I still have my first-edition Thomas books from when I was a little kid - a dozen of them are on the shelf behind me as I type this! The colour dustjacket wrappers are long gone, but otherwise they're in pretty good order.
They still raise a smile when I look through them now and then.... :)

Some months ago in a bookshop I saw a set of reproductions of the first Thomas books for sale at half price - about £25. I was greatly tempted to buy them for my three year old great niece, but knew I wouldn't be able to make that story stick.

I can remember 60 years ago at the Infants School, Thomas books alongside the Janet & John books. Can't always remember why I've walked from one room tyo another though - its remarkable just what does make an impression on your mind!

How many of you know that Christopher, Wilbert Awdry's son, continued writing Thomas stories after Wilbert gave up? He wrote books 27 to 42. Book 42, Thomas and his Friends, was published as recently as 2011. Needless to say I have all 42 books!
