Wheelbase and wheel size for HLW Mack Switcher?

Does anyone have a HLW Mack diesel switcher and a ruler handy?

I could do with knowing the length of the wheelbase and wheel sizes.

Rik

PS - I don't suppose it has extended axles as well by any chance?

Hi Rik,

It just so happens I have one here on my workbench - the following measurements are approximate only because it's quite hard to measure without taking the chassis apart, so I've had to eyeball it as best I can!

Wheelbase is APPROX. 76mm, and wheel diameter (excluding flanges) is APPROX. 38mm or so. If by extended axles you mean the wheels sticking out from the motor block, then no they don't - wheel backs to gearbox is less than 2mm.

Does that help? :)

Approximate is good enough. I'm just trying to find a replacement mechanism for my IP Jessie which has now worked its way through three gearboxes. Its wheelbase is 60mm and wheel dia is 29.5mm. I was hoping the Mack might work but it sounds like it might involve a bigger rebuild than I'd hope for. I'll keep looking - unless someone out there knows of something which might fit - maybe there's a motor bogie which would do the job???

The extended axles are to fit fly cranks outside the frames.

AristoCraft art. no. 29356 has approx. 60 mm axle c/c distance, and the wheel diameter approx. 29 mm. Could be hard to get though, with Aristo not longer in business.

Ah, OK, I see what you mean - in that case, no, it doesn't have them.

One odd thought, if you want a very small motor unit with smallish wheels - what about one of the old MDC Big Hustlers, they seem to come up for sale every now and then? No idea what sort of quality their motor and gearbox are, I'm simply thinking of the size question.

I think the USAT 44 Ton swither bogie may be close to all your needs as the wheels are the right size and have extended axels if I remember correctly.

I've got a USA Trains motor block I bought in the Charles Roshop in Boston years ago. It's probably a 44 tonner, but I can't see any markings. I think most USAT have extended axles.
Charles Ro don't seem to advertise 'spare parts' like motor blocks but were quite willing to sell when I asked. If someone else can truely confirm the 44 tonner is suitable, an email to them might be worthwhile.
Or just buy the 44 tonner and take one motor block out .

Wheelbase 85mm, wheels 28 dia and axles extend 6mm out from wheels.

Thanks chaps - one of those USAT bogies sounds just the job. I'll investigate

GRS might still sell the at a price, a few other UK dealer might have one left as a few years ago most stocked them.

Thanks Steve
Just checked on the GRS website and it's listed (for £76!!). I've placed an order cos I reckon I'll be lucky to find anywhere else which stocks them but I know from past experience that the GRS online database does not reflect their current stock levels.

I anticipate a phone call on Monday saying "Sorry .........."

Did try eBay - there's one in the States for a reasonable price - but with £35 postage - and a couple of Aristo diesel locos but at around £250 I'm not going to fork out that much just for the power bogie

Rik
PS - Just had a thought. This one on eBay doesn't look like the short wheelbase bogie to me....

If it was, I could get my brother in law to buy it and bring it over when he next visits the UK (assuming he's not stopped at customs).

Has this one on eBay been mis-labelled or is it really the short wheelbase bogie?

I think these may be the ones:

Mislabeled. See this link for the 29356, one of the pictures also shows the dimensions: http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php?topic=218.0
As I suspected, thanks.
Think I'll go for the USAT 'medium' bogie, assuming that GRS don't have any Aristo stock left. Although its wheelbase is longer - there is sufficient space beneath the body for it and it has extended axles so I can mount the fly-cranks. I'll just need to fashion a longer pair of con-rods.
