Wheel Sensors with earlier LGB 6500x sound modules

I'm not altogether happy with my attempts to synchronise steam chuffs with CV 64.
I'd like to fit a Hall effect sensor.
Later 6500x units produced by Marklin/LGB list a CV (195) to set up a pulse generator but I can't find anything similar in the instructions for the older units.
The older instructions do make reference to adjustments without a wheel sensor, but these only confuse me. For example, "CV 64 If the wheel sensor is not installed on a drive axle you can adjust for different wheel diameters. You can also program the number of magnets." Why would you have sychronisation magnets without a wheel sensor? Does the unit automatically detect a sensor?

If you plug a Hall effect sensor into a 6500X sound unit the pulses from the sensor will be detected once the loco gets moving. If it is an LGB loco the easiest way is to fit a Massoth detector & just plug it into the taco socket on the sound unit. Just watch the detector doesn't rub on the magnet.
