What railway holidays will you be taking this summer.

stockers

Trains, aircraft, models, walking, beer, travel
Country flag
Got any plans for this summer? :D
With a bit of luck I might get back to the Harz mountains (HSB), well I hope so anyway.
I also intend to get to the Spa Valley Railway (Tunbridge Wells, Kent),its quite close but I have never been. Andy from Kent Garden Railways has his full size loco there.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway & Island line trains (As Usual) The North York Moors and one other , between the North Norfolk or Bluebell. We shall be holidaying in the area, the presence of a railway is purely coincidental ;) Baye De Somme also under consideration but that will probably be next year.
What ! No narrow gauge this year :o

prob some of the welsh stuff, been promising to go up Snowdon, but never managed it

Off to Wales this year. We did Snowdon last year, pick your day as carefully as possible. At the top I couldn't see more than 5 feet, and the rain was horizontal. Still a great experience though.

Back to Corris I hope.
Small, quaint, big ideas, lovely setting

Well, it will be winter/spring in this part of the world, but planning on the wildflowers in WA for SWMBO with some heritage trains for me (and her it has to be grudgingly admitted) followed by a return to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific.

Hope to do the Hartz late summer for 3 or 4 days. Also looking at a "mini tour" alternative to take in East Lanc's, NRM, North Yorks and North Norfolk.
Max.

I shall be riding the footplate of the Watercress Line in Hampshire for a couple of hours in April. Not a holiday in itself but...

Not having had a proper holiday (as a result of caring for my late Mum) since doing the LGB Birthday Party in Nuremburg a few years ago I'm planning a couple of possible shortish trips abroad this year:

- a few days in Germany early April with some O gauge friends to catch a couple of exhibitions and do a quick trip to the HSB to do the Quedlinburg - Gernrode section - the only part of the HSB system that I have not done. Tracklaying of this section was just starting when I made my last trip to Gernrode.

- a short trip to China in September with the Bachmann Collectors Club to chase some standard gauge steam somewhere north (I think) of Beijing (wherever the Pinzhaung area and places like Yuabaoshan and Diaobingshan are!!), visit the China Railway Museum in Beijing and then head down to Guangzhou to visit the Kadar factory before spending a couple of days in Hong Kong (where I first started work in 1966!!)

Rest of the year will, I hope, be spent breathing life back into the EG&SNNR........ ::) ;)

Yeah its a decent drive to see the wildflowers but from personal experience they are simply stunning (if you are into flowers). I hope you find some heritage trains, but do visit Whiteman Park in Perth on the weekend they have some very interesting trams there at PETS. The Indian Pacific is a trip you do once (and once only). Now what I did was take a bottle of seawater from Cottlesloe beach and then returned it to the sea at Batemans Bay, I was wanting to see how long it took for the ocean to level out again.

Yes, the concept of 2 days of the Nullabor is an interesting one. We did the Ghan a couple of years ago and enjoyed that, so decided we needed to do this rather than driving both ways.

We have a week or so in Perth including a week end so will certainly try to get to the trams!

Coming up to Autumn here but after Mum's 90th end of march ( she is getting to pat a Cheetah for her birthday) we plan to go to the Blue Mountains for a week or so. Lots of very expensive eateries and tourist attractions to rip the traveller off but we will visit the Loco Depot at Valley Heights for some real Baldwin action, the Scenic Railway at Katoomba has been recently totally revamped and lost all its charm and character so we will do the decent into the Valley. The Zig Zag is back running limited railcar services so we may swing by ( after the bush fire they need all the help they can get).... Eat some very expensive chocolates at Leura and take in some pornographic sculpture and paintings at the Lindsay Galleries in Faulconbridge.... Fortunately the Asian Tourists are short so you can see over their heads at the lookouts... I think the Giant Staircase is closed.... Of course I'll take the obligatory photos of the 3 sisters and scream out something at Echo Point... Maybe even muster the intestinal fortitude to drive out to Jenolan Caves.... Then we will drive back to Canberra via the inland route....

;) Indeed, 'cause every other time I've gone to use it, they've been on strike!
Cobber believe me you are not missing much, hours of doing nothing spending all day in your cabin because the "Club Car" has limited seating and you can't get a seat there.... But you are correct about cancellations, delays and general stuffing around.... Its so bad that the fine print in tours has a disclaimer about "travel on the Indian Pacific" "may not be available"..... Take the trip from Pucton to Christchurch far better and they have open cars for photographers....

>:( Take your point about getting a seat in the Club Car. A bit like the Sightseeing Lounges on the Amtrak Superliners, car fills up with Sleeping Car passengers, who promptly take up all the room, and plant their nose in a book for the day, not bothering to enjoy the view.

Best Aussie train experience, the old(er) Overland, when it ran at night with the J series cars. Best American, Parlour Car on the Coast Starlight.

I still reckon the Gulflander is a "real" train experience, well for romantics like me...

:D On my 'to do' list. Still part of QR?

Got a family wedding in Scotland next year.... checked out some trains from London, the 10.00 from Kings Cross to Edinburgh seemed to ring a bell. It my not still be called the Flying Scotsman, but nevertheless, looks a likely trip... even has 'off peak' fare!
