Very basic questions

I've used MRC G scale sound decoders in a couple of my older LGB diesel locos.

£60-70 from my local model shop and rated at 6A.

I've had to fit larger speakers than the coin type supplied. I used some from PCs we had to strip out for disposal (WEEE regulations).

So DCC doesn't need to be expensive....

I agree with whats been said about Lenz, its certainly a great pity that they dont produce a complete sound decoder like for instance QSI, however they are great value and very repairable

Does it mean that there is 'standard' connection protocol such that if I purchased any decoder with SUSI then I ought be able to connect any sound card with SUSI?

Yes. However currently the only sound cards that I know of the support SUSI are the Massoth S and the Dietz/Ulhenbrock ones.

Do you know if they will have load dependant and speed programmable function outputs Cliff? A programmable uncoupling 'shuffle' would be a good addition too.

I don't know Shropie, I'll ask for you.

Apparently we are going to get quote 'time controlled switching of function outputs (e.g. for coupling)' whatever that may mean.

I asked them for an expansion of the number of functions, and for some feature that only work on digital to also work on analogue. They told me there would be an expanded number of functions (this is really needed so that all of the features of SUSI sound decoders can be accessed).

Lenz timescales have always been optimistic in the past.

Have you configured CV 49 Gizzy? As suppied the default setting on an L decoder is for the Massoth bus.
Yes mate and I have double checked it with Muns too....

Our G Scale Society group leader had a similar problem Gary. I investigated the issue and it seemed that the L decoder he had had an earlier version of software/firmware that didn't support the SUSI even though the SUSI socket was fitted. We put in a different L decoder with newer software/firmware and the SUSI bus worked correctly. Massoth currently have the older L decoder for software/firmware updating.

Just discovered that I can't "reply" to my own messages....
I'm going to be on the stand from 3.30pm until close of play, when I also get to help pack up.
However, I'm at the show from before 2 pm so you could always ask if anyone on the stand can spot me....

I should be there on the exhibit stand of the Devon G Scale society group "Trains in your Garden" from some time (yet to be confirmed) in the afternoon until close of play when I'm helping pack up. The stand normally has one DCC loop and a DC loop so there should be some DCC stuff running and I shall be taking some of my DCC stuff to provide variety of stock. Still very new to this DCC business myself but we can talk about some aspects. I'll post a better time guide when I'm "on duty" later.

There's certainly no problem with adding sound later, there's even options. You can add a dcc sound board such as the Massoth S mentioned above or something like the Mylocosound board which would give a basic chuff rather than actual recordings if real locos like on the dcc sound units. The dcc boards offer more control and realisim but that's why they cost more ;)
Might be worth popping down to the Exeter garden railway show next weekend to see if there are any layouts or traders you can actually see and talk about the options. Can't see anything obvious in the list but It'll be worthwhile regardless.

Might have to ask Muns about this as he supplied the decoder earlier this year....
