Using MST to read non-Massoth decoders

I have a couple of locos with non-Massoth decoders fitted and I’d like to adjust some of their CVs.

I do have a SPROG I could use for this but since Microtwerps changed something in Windoze a while back I have to go through a fairly tiresome rigmarole to install some of the software it needs every time I want to use it. (For Heaven’s sake, why do they do stuff like that?!!!)

I also have an old version of the ESU Loksound programming gizmo but the manual is long, very small print (couldn’t find an on-line version when I bought the thing) and not the most user-friendly, and I guess I’d have a fight with Windoze again if i try to reinstall the software.

(I appreciate that as a Mac user of over 10 years now I’m rusty on Windows - I only use it for running the MST and occasionally reviewing MS Project plans for people - so maybe I’m being a tad more gloomy than necessary.)

Normally, I’d just fire up the MST and try to read the decoder data but at this moment I can’t get at the module as it’s buried under a bunch of stuff I can’t move. So, just wondering if anyone has done this and, if so, any tips?

Yeah, no need to run windows on a Mac to run JMRI, just another layer of software you can do without.
Thanks for the info. I’m a long time Parallels user but never bothered loading railway type software on my MacBook as it was primarily used for work and I had a reasonable (for the time) Windows laptop. Also, I mostly use MST to do programming and that works fine on Windoze.

Good to know there’s a version of JMRI that runs on Mac OS. I’ll give that a go tomorrow and see if I can dig out the SPROG.
 
You can use MST for any DCC decoder but you need to know what CVs you want to change(the decoder manual is invaluable here!). Just open any template then use the Single CV Read/Write. I used the Massoth PC Programmer and MST this way many times until I finally figured out how to use my CS3 to change DCC decoder CVs. Still use it sometimes.

Thanks. I assume it’s best to ignore the tabs other than “all CVs” so I have fine control over what I read/write.
 
Yes, and absolutely do not use anything but the single CV write unless the template is for the actual decoder type you are programming. Even for things as simple as a change of address. Otherwise, multiple CVs may be changed in the background and really screw things up!o_O

Yes this is critical whish I head read this post prior to using the update template instead of a single CV last night I managed to mess up a Gaugemaster DCC90 Ruby Series 2fn Standard DCC Decoder 8 Pin using MST tool.
Luckily there is a CV that you can reset the DCC90 decoder by changing CV 8 which worked.
I then set each CV in turn and tested.

Phil i wonder if there is a way to create a template for other decoders off their CV setup table might be useful ani ideas ?

Many thanks for the pictures showing decoder and yes that's what I did reset the cv 08 and the decoder was reset many thanks
