Used 48" LGB track came with metal joiners every 12"

Just picked up some used LGB 48" straight track (circa 1999, labeled 1000010). That part number is not made anymore.
Not sure if it was manufactured this way but there are standard brass joiners every 12", on both sides, 6 per track. The joiners are actually long enough to go between the track bottom and ties.
I'd like to remove them if they're not necessary. Any thoughts on this. Thank you!

I think they are there to stop the separate sections of sleepers on a long track length (on1.5 m flexi track lengths there are 5 sets of sleepers) from "kreeping" to one end or creating unsightly gaps. I have seen the same on 1200 mm set track from LGB. Max
