Two SUSI smoke generators off one output?

Hi,

I have a quick question, or maybe better to call it a vague idea...!

Would it be possible to run two pulsed smoke generators, linked using SUSI, from one decoder SUSI output? I'm still experimenting with DCC synchronised smoke in our US diesels and I just wondered if it was possible? Is there an adaptor for this?

I recently got hold of a massoth pulsed smoke unit and was pretty impressed. I tested it out from the SUSI output of a Zimo decoder and results were really good. A lot of our diesels have two exhausts so would ideally need to smoke units.

Many of our locos are old USAT units and don't have fan driven smoke units, so if I was going to go down the route of smoke I would need to replace them anyway so I was just thinking out loud on this....

Any thoughts or ideas are warmly welcomed!

Technically you can connect 3 SUSI devices to one decoder.

Massoth produce an adaptor/splitter board 8312079 http://www.gardenrailoutlet.co.uk/massoth-susi-to-susi-adaptor-board.

I am not sure if the SUSI CV address range on the Pulsed Smoke units can be changed to avoid conflict.

When you say conflict, what do you mean exactly?

If two units were running together in one loco , I would obviously want them all on the same DCC address etc, would this cause an issue? Is there something in the way SUSI works that would prevent this?

Does it need two units - can't you simply pipe the output of one unit to the two exhaust vents? Might not be quite as impressive though!

That's what I was thinking!

I know it's maybe not the cheapest option, but I would really like to use two so that I can have much more control over their outputs as the loco accelerates and slows down.

I have just checked the manual and my concerns re SUSI CV range is valid with the latest incarnation of the unit. There is no reference to the SUSI CV ranges (CV900-923, 940-963 & 980-1003) in the latest documentation. The previous version has these references. This is probably because the latest digital version has a full DCC decoder and connects direct to the track.

Hi Mark,

I`m sure you are probably right on this one, but I was flicking again through the manual online for the Massoth smoke unit when I noticed something under "programming lock."

It mentions something about setting CV15 and CV16 to 161 if a second smoke unit is used?

What do you think?

My last post is wrong, it looks like I missed an important word - the word missed was "not". It should have read....

My apologies.

The programming lock allows you to install multiple decoders into a loco. Each Massoth decoder should have a different lock value in CV16 (by default each type of Massoth decoder has a different value). If you wish to program one of the decoders, you set CV15 to the required value for that decoder (the value in CV16 of that decoder), this allows the decoder to respond to the read/write CV operation.

I know it's not the cheapest route but I may have a think about the SUSI adapter and a second pulsed smoke unit.

I'd like to use my current F3 kitbash as test bed so I'll post an update as things progress.
