I recently came across what seems to be a very successful way of cleaning brass rail - very fine (1200 grit?) wet-and-dry paper, used wet, followed by a ball of old socks to wipe off the resulting slurry. I discovered this after using the w&d (initially dry) immediately after a rain shower. Never seen such a shine, minimal effort, very quick with no apparent ill effects on the track. The w&d was wrapped round a plastic sanding block from the pound shop (discard the sandpaper that comes with it - useless). The socks were rescued from the "ragbag" we save for the charity shop. They get money for it.
