Hi Folks,

After months of waiting Bachmann's large scale Toby the Tram engine has finally arrived on Pine Tree Junction.

He needs to be converted to radio control and battery power before we can make his first little movie but here are some photos of him sitting around the railway in the bright Winter sunshine!

Toby looks good. Hopefully we'll see him in action very shortly. I'm collecting my Toby from Steve the Shop on 22nd at the West Midlands Area Group meeting at Solihull. Can't wait.

Hi Keith, I sure you won't be disappointed when you collect your Toby from Steve. I shall be tackling the conversion this weekend so I will let you know how I get on.

Looks great! After a couple of years with realistic and beefy Bachmanns. I'm really drawn to the whimsical now. Probably me age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw your video on Youtube. Toby looks great. It's difficult to tell, but are the front and rear cabs accessible? Can you place a driver in them?

Hi, Thanks for the post and you are as old as you feel - which is 95 most days with me! We have great fun making our little Thomas videos - and our grandchildren like them as well, which is a bonus and a good excuse to keep on making them. I must say the Bachmann large scale engine and trucks are really well made and have taken all sorts of knocks and bangs in the making of our little videos. They have been submerged in water, thrown off our bridges, 'blown up' and crashed into one another lots of times. We have had some for over fours years now and not one single problem with any of them. I'm sure Toby will do well on Pine Tree so hope you keep watching!

Hi, Thanks for the post. Toby is a great addition to the Bachmann Thomas range and I'm sure will be a big hit.

I'm afraid the windows and doors are filled in although I guess some clever folk could try and recess the doors and windows.

There's lots of space inside, particularly at the front. You could make enough space to get a driver in although the eye mechanism is at the front of the motor and gear block which would prevent you from opening up across to the other door space.

I'm sure we shall see lots of conversions as folks experiment with them but I think we will stick with him as seen.

I had 2 arrive from Dragon G yesterday and have to admit good looking units, one is for myself and one for the CFR, both will be radio controlled, one is almost ready just waiting for the transmitter and receiver.
The speed controller came from Peter Spoerer.
The transmitter I sourced comes complete with batteries and charging lead, 3.7v, must admit first time I have seen this. just one comment re Toby, the couplings do not appear able to be lowered as on previous T t T locos

I have received mine. I was disapointed to find the couplings were not the same height as LGB. and no adaptors supplied.
However after some careful attempts, I fitted LGB ones by adding some washers to a longer screw and an addional screw from under the front by sawing off the LGB hook fitting boss, and screwing into a hole drilled into the mounting location boss above, it needed to be approx. 5-6 mm. lower. Care was need to avoid damage to the end skirts.
I had to leave off the hook from both ends. But that will not bother the grandkids hopefully.

Hi Tony, All sounds great and will look forward to seeing them perform on the CFR soon!

Hi, Sounds like a good solution. The low end skirts could prove a problem for some garden railways. Toby went around Pine Tree Junction yesterday without any real problems although I did have to adjust the wooden guides on our trestle bridges. All part of the fun!

Must admit with reference to the skirts, they are low if you have anything close to rail height, all part of the fun.
Have managed to lower the couplers by using the original adaptors supplied with other Thomas stock, only able to use the loops as not enough clearance to fit the hooks.

Hi Tony, Sounds fine to me. I will have to try this out on our Toby and see what he looks like. Since we have started to use the Playmobil stuff we filmed on the CFR last year we have been swapping the couplers depending on what we are filming. I will try Toby with the various trucks when I finish the conversion. I need an inline fuse holder so should get that sometime this week. See you soon!
