A Stainz thread already! Now I know I'm home.

Thanks Paul!

well ive passed through the looking glass -!!

i have a question regarding a brown number 2 i bought in an early set-

came with brown and green coaches and old style couplers -has square roof hatch- i estmiate it circa 1970-71-but im no expert

this loco is in good shape, and has the faded pinkish red chassis
-had the later style headlamps-but-these headlamps has a painted white interior (now a rather yellow creme)

and no lens-

is this how they were originally or did they have lens ?

(i presume the seprate white plastic insert (reflector) came in later lamp revisions-but in my experience the lens are so snug that its hard for me to believe that both the front and rear lamps both lost the lens

Hi Steve

The larger headlamps and square roof vent came in 1971 with the pick up skates and 2200 motorblock. This is per the Official Guide to LGB by Kalmbach.

In '73, the windows got painted goldish trim.

mine does not have gold lwindwo trim
and having looked-i am reminded it does not have power plugs for coach lighting
and i am confident it is as from the factory

so -

didi it come with lens or not?

Somewhere, buried in a pile of boxes, I have one...
I do remember it is an aniversary model of some type.
Color???????
Purchased it when TrainWorld was blowing out some, without boxes.
It does have a power plug in, but not the current type. Purchased it to pull
a Chicken Dance car, then discovered it has a different receptical.
Ms.G. didn't like it, she said it made too much noise..
I guess it was the skates dragging on the track making the growling noise.
I'll have to dig it out and see if anyone can help me identify it...
dave...

Nice pics Paul, like you say the lighting is very good in them.
Gotta love the stainz, I have two, one of which I hope to repaint black but in the mean time I may try a light weathering on it. The other stays original.

Well, no mention of no lenses in the Kalmbach book, and your 2020 sounds to be identical to mine (no power sockets, skates, no pinted trim, brown cab) so I would *guess* that they are missing from your model.

Question, can you put a Stainz lens in the lights?

yes i can put in a lens-i just thought it odd that both were missing-and
if youve ever tried -they arent easy to remove once snapped into the housing- so i had presumed that it wasnt a coincidence
but it appears im wrong-

wasnt able to tell from the box lid photo

it is amazing how such a little engine did us all in-
i, like paul, have a warm spot for these -always reliable, pull so well-tolerate abysmal track-and are one handed carry and placement

i do lament that LGB took liberties -the engine is amazing in the HO versions-when you get all the proportions correct and drivers the correct size-they are just super-the LGB version is close but misses a bit when compared to 'models'-perhaps they shortened the boiler and thats what i see-not quite sure but theres something off ever so slightly

i have had so much joy from my original starter set ( 1987 i believe)

once i lighted the coaches and added a tail lantern-simple fun in the dark and rain

my real favorite though are the 2015's and variations (do they count as stainzs?)

(allthough i'm quite sure, that i got it chrismas 69 or 70)

it got no plastikglas and no inset in the lights. just eggshell-white colour. neither got it plugs, nor golden window rims.

the roof got a square hatch, and riveted bands from side to side. it got skates and and a traction tire.

http://kormsen.ko.funpic.de/bahn/stainzen1.JPG

It's a funnel! for filling the Well tank...............................

I had one of the Egger H0e ones, ran like a watch consiering its age. Sold it as it was just so darn small!!!!

Interesting find there Korm and Steve on the lenses (and yes, a pig to get out, don't just fall out like the later ones). I wish I had paid attention to the few older sets I have seen in my time now.

Great pics.
One of those Welsh arty shots.

:applause: Very typical. :)

look how much lower and narrower it is-
i love that pic-has the diminutive teapot look i like so much

-wish the LGB version had the same proportions-and those cool little lights near the cylinders
