The SHLR Reborn - Finally made a start on the new railway

Well I've finally managed to find time to start on the new railway. Now if you didn't see the SHLR Mark I there's a link to the old SHLR here http://www.gscalecentral.net/tm?m=45501&high=shlr

With the new railway comes a new name (same initials though), and a new method of construction.

The SHLR will now become the Shropshire Hills Light Railway. A narrow gauge line set in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty.

Because of the number of trees in the new garden, floating the track on loose ballast as per the old SHLR was out of the question, I need to be able to use the leaf blower in the autumn/winter months which would lift loose ballast as well as leaves. I didn't fancy the idea of cementing the trackwork in, so I've opted for a timber based trackbed.

The whole thing will be mounted on decking board timbers, placed smooth side up and covered with shed felt to simulate a ballasted trackbed.

Here's my first curve under construction.

and a test fit of the R2 curves

The timbers are mounted on lengths of 34mm UPVC waste pipe staked into the ground. Got mine from Wickes but other brands are available.

I used a 35mm Auger bit to cut a suitable sized hole in the timbers (this gives just enough wiggle room to make adjustments when the timber is fitted). The whole completed framework section is then screwed to the pipe lengths once they've been staked in and levelled (that was the theory anyhoo).

Heres the completed curve section now mounted and ready to take the track.

and finally the track in place (thought now secured yet until the timbers is felted). It was a lot of work to get one curve but that was mostly down to the need to crawl under the trees to get it all in place (I have the grazes and scars to prove it).

Just quick last shot showing the path of the trackwork along the fence as highlighted by my spirit level. Just got to negotiate another sodding tree first.

Good to see you have made a start Gareth no stopping you now

'Way to go' mate - your on a roll.

Yay, a new start....

Looking good, Gareth.

Well managed to get some more done this weekend. First lets start with that authorised land-grab mention in Post #2, (and then we'll talk about the unauthorised one  )

We had this brick built BBQ thingy on the patio when we moved in.

Well we aint got it anymore. Authorised land grab complete.

So whilst the missus was on a girlie night out yesterday evening, an unauthorised land grab got underway.

and got finished long before she got home. Anyhoo she didn't mind when she saw it, Result

So that was yesterdays progress. On to today. Started to lay out one of my Station areas before cutting and laying the boards down. Put a couple of gentle curves in using the GSC approved method of track bending known as "belly bending"

After a bit of bending, cutting and fishplate fitting I'd sorted out my station loop.

Well at that point I should have lifted the loop section and started cutting timber. But I couldn't wait to do some testing. So, I threw a couple of boards under to get the levels, hooked up some power and had a testing session.

First I needed to do clearance testing at the back of the tree that I thinned out last week.

and into the station area. If you hadn't already spotted yet the wagon of choice for testing was the GSC Round robin Boxcar.

and onto the inner loop.

Now that I know it's all good I can start getting the boards cut and fitted permantly.

Slow progress but getting there

Brillaint work Gareth , great to see you up and running again

go for it garath, its all good progress!!

Looking great mate! and nice to see the boxcar traveling around again!!!

Finally had a break in the weather, work and all other interruptions on Sunday, so made a little more progress through the Shrubbery.

Finally we exit the Shrubbery on to edge of the lawn.

A few general shots through the bushes. The line in the background is actually completely level whereas the foreground line has a very gentle downward slope, in the hope that the difference in heights creates the illusion that this isn't a simple continuous run. Undecided now whether to have the foreground line simply pas in front of the rear line at the lower level or whether to have the lines cross each other further down the lawn and put in a spiral.

Love this bit where the foreground line disappears through the bush. Will have to be careful that it doesn't encroach on the line too much. Maybe cut a nice natural tunnel mouth into it.
