The Peckforton Railway from the air

I suppose one of the perks of setting a model railway in a real location is the opportunity to visit where it would have been had it really existed. For my 60th birthday my wife bought me a flight in a microlight and I persuaded the pilot to fly over part of the route of my railway.

OK - I know it's really an opportunity to show-off - but it's not every day I get this type of bird's eye view of the route of my fictional railway

It was in a two-seat microlight:

I flew in a Pegasus Quik - basically a motorised kite.

Very exhilarating. Cruising speed of 65 knots. We flew at around 1500 feet but dropped to around 1000 feet to see some of the sights. If I hadn't already got a hobby I could be tempted. The comedian Lenny Bennett once said it's a bit like motorcycling, except at the end of the field you take off.

Another picture as we were approaching Beeston Castle, looking over the shoulder of the pilot (I'm riding pillion)

I know the area well (at least at road level). Hope to make it over to see the 1:22 version soon Rik.

You're welcome any time Paul. The model does look slightly better from ground level than from 1000 feet, as I can now testify.
