Nettys posts about his new trainset set me thinking. Trainsets are temporary layouts, and a lot of stuff gets carried forward from one layout to the next. In my case, the 'cut bits of track' box gains a few lumps every time, but most of the buildings go.
My first train set at this house was based very loosely around Aigle depot in Switzerland. The town line comes in at the bottom, and the rack line leaves at the top, and all trains reverse in the depot yard.

The shed is enormous so I compromised at 4 feet by 18 inches - even then it had to be built in situ.

Trainsets come and go, but I kept the shed as a 'flatpack' until it re-appeared in cut down form in 2007

By 2008, the rest of the line was taking shape and the shed was looking 'planted'

In 2009, a total absence of TLC was beginning to show. The building was also developing a slight kneel to the front. The concensus from the regulars was that I should leave the shed and see which happened first - I finish the layout or the shed falls to bits...

By 2010 the rot is beginning to show, and there is a slight bowing out at the front. The Autumn vote - fix or leave - again returned leave, so left it was.

So, to this year. The new cat was at least brave enough to try it for size.

A spiffy new sign was added, amid speculation that the building would finally keel over under the weight.

And so to this years vote - held last saturday - and dissent ! There was a brief suggestion that the shed was looking in a very sorry state, and maybe deserved some timely renovation. However the stakeholders were reminded of the rules - If the shed falls over before I get fed up, the train set gets pulled up and we build a different one. Now that the balance of my work has moved from build to maintain, which gives the layout until 2013 latest, it was finally agreed to let well alone....

I think the mould adds character. The walls look like plywood; did you treat them with anything? The tram-terminus-cat-shelter photo gave me a good laugh, too :D Finally, that terminus at Aigle is brilliant - would make a good model in any scale.

I agree, the shed looks more realistic now then it did in your earlier photos. Keep it.

The shed was made out of so called marine ply I bought years ago. I'm quite glad I never built the boat...... :nail::nail:
'Treatment' as such was 2 coats of masonry paint about 10 years ago.
Like the shed, the latest building is inspired by a real place, but as its plastic I may have to wait a while before it gets some character !

I never kept much of a record of the Aigle inspired layout but I did find this copy of the control panel graphic. The track plan was all sprung points and fixed uncoupling ramps, and the two outer termini were identical. We ran 5 trains and a tram to a 40+ move timetable, which put everything back at its start position. Unfortunately there was only about 20 feet of track between the depot and the stations, however there was enough action to keep three people amused.
