Steam and Snow on the Vale of Ystwyth

Had a few inches of sbow today and as Ceredigion Council haven't gritted any minor roads near my house I was unable to get out of the village to go to work. So I though the best thig to do was to run some trains. After clearing the track with my newly constructed snow blower I ran the shay first to make sure everything was ok.

its unbelievable!

the UK seems to sink in the snow, and we here just have a bit powdered landscape, not even enough to snow-plowing.

Great pics James. That rake of coaches looks superb:thumbup:.

Please pass on my best wishes to your dad for his birthday.

Cheers Mel, i'll tell him. I'm very pleased with the coaches, they're the new laser cut kits and go together very well and make up a pleasing rake.

Have IP's wheels been improved on these new kits?

I did enjoy the pics.

The trestle looked as if it would fit in nicely down here.

Lovely set of pics:thumbup: How does the shay run in the snow do you have any problems with the drive gears ?

Very atmospheric pictures. That grey caboose is interesting - a nice change from the usual red or yellow.

Hi there ,
Excellent pictures, I too would like to know how your Shay performs in poor weather , as was thinking of getting one
Cheers Garry.

I've used the plywood bogies with the new IP wheels and they are fine Mel. Very sure-footed and of course they wouldn't short out either.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing them!

The wheels with the IP kits are exactly the same as usual so I'd imagine you'd have the same problem. The coaches are all 4 wheelers and the axleboxes are whitemetal, I believe the bogie coaches use wooden bogies now. I don't run electric so shorting out isn't an issue and I'll only find out when i take them to Dad's house.

The shay ran fine in the snow, it's battery powered so there was no problem with pickup. It picked up quite a bit of snow in the gears etc but after I'd ran it I let it dry off by a heater and oiled everything again - ran ok this morning.

Paul, hopefully I'll be at Altricham on the 16th, I'll bring something to run.

Very nice James, full of atmosphere, good man for braving the cold
