Station Layouts

One of the facsinations of model railways and full size railways are track layouts and in particular station layouts.
My garden railway theme is Austrian - I have studied Schmalspürig dürch Österreirch and replicated typical NG plans which frequently consist of two passing loops with headshunts and or sidings.
So from the top we have Linz (incorporating Garsten shed and a reverse loop), Purgstall, Gstadt and Wieselburg - all real locations but my station layouts are fictional but plausible if a little short on length.

Have you replicated layouts in your garden ?

DSC02902 (Small).JPG Yes Paul - as you say, two passing loops and a few sidings - often as headshunts. It seems a common layout in Europe yet a twin loop is not common in the UK.

I must admit that my stations have changed over the years and opportunities for shunting in station limits have diminished whilst continuos running as become preferable.
Head shunts and bay platforms were altered into through roads. Sidings were turned into passing loops.
Only the former rack branch line retains terminal tracks and head shunts. There are no run round facilities on the branch so it is a two locomotive operation. Great fun.

Usually with Swiss and Austrian stations on single lines, the track nearest the buildings is the goods siding.

The other tracks are the through passing loops. Passengers tended to wait in the station then cross the inner loop to either of the through loops in times gone by? Nowadays though, Health and Safety means you can't cross the tracks as before....
 
Mmm, I studied those station layouts and didn't see any stains there at all :p:p:p:p:p:p

I am more of the impressionist school, but having stood (out of boredom) at the end of many station platforms in this country, have formed the opinion that track layouts should have a bit of realistic shape to them, particularly in the way that points (turnouts) are incorporated.

I don't have access to my pictures on the lappy here, but fully intend to incorporate a likeness of Skagway junction (it's in my holiday snaps thread) into the new garden layout. I think there are also sufficient prototype weird formations and oddities to accommodate most tastes and needs, You just need to find one or two and replicate the principles.
