From my notes to identify Stainz locos
Stainz Cabs- Older raised numbering versions
Original 1968 N01 Light green, round vent, Plain Roof, also used on early Clamshell mechs, No lighting sockets, darker green version also exists
1970's light green, dark green, light brown and dark brown versions exist with ribbed roof, square vent without lighting sockets,
mid 1970's same colours, ribbed roof, square vent, lighting socket in raised black oval
mid 1980's roof design changes, with raised pips on corners of roof, lighting socket moulded into cab
N02 cabs
Original 1968 chocolate brown, round vent, plain roof no lighting sockets, some lighter brown cabs exist, also used on early clamshells
1970s Mid green cab with ribbed roof and square vent, no lighting socket
mid 1970's as above but with black oval lighting socket
mid 1980's roof design changes as no1 cab and lighting socket change
N03 cabs
Official no N03 cabs exist, However pictures exist of a Blue cabbed loco with raised no3 numbering
N04 cabs
1969 Black cab, Plain roof, round vent, no lighting socket
1971 as above but on clamshell mech
circa 1973 last of the N04 with a Ribbed roof, square vent, no lighting sockets
Officaly no no4 cabs ever had lighting sockets, however some no4 cabs with lighting sockets were used for sets made for a german toyshop, I have one
The N04 cab however with the later mid 1980's roof moulding apeared as the Red Xmas loco in the mid 1980's and early 1990's sets
The n01 and no2 cabs have been used for a variety of specials and consumer runs, but by looking at the roof mouldings and rear lighting socket mouldings a approx date can be made. But be wary LGB had a habbit of using up the parts bin to make low runs for specials.
So a Plain roof and round vent usally dates the loco pre 1971, but a n04 cab may date to 1973
A early ribbed roof and square vent with no lighting socket, usally is before 1974
A ribbed roof and square vent with a raised black lighting socket dates the loco between 1973 and 1980
A ribbed roof with corner pip and square vent with a flush lighting socket dates the loco between 1980 and 1990 if it has a clamshell mech
1989 to the last metal rodded Stainz with raised numbers, had early sandwitch boxes,
