Sprog-todays mission should I decide to accept it!

We seem to be on the same wavelength Nick.

Well wasted a few hours last night.........

Its a SprogIIv3 its recognised as such in device manager but under COM ports rather than USB as in the instructions??

When I tried to update software it says it has latest version, I then installed JRM but no joy

So SPROG is listed on one of the COM ports; ok make a note which one and make sure to configure JMRI as a SPROG connection using that port.

Done that Nick, but if I try to read a decoder the motor clicks very gently but it doesn't recognize the decoder, and I've tried a few different locos

Would love a Sprog, Andy Rush had one and after hours of effort we both gave up with the thing. Must have been an old man impatience thing with us. It went the way with all his other 00 kit. Perhaps one day I may try again, but as I have a Mac this may be an issue. I get by with doing just one CV at a time on my Massoth Handset, in truth I alter so few CV's that one would probably be a waste of dosh for me. Though some of my older LGB loco's are reluctant to be updated by the Massoth kit, they were done on my mates old LGB Kit. Now he has a CS2/3 that avenue is closed for my older locs. Perhaps I may in time swop them over to Massoth Chips, ther are only 2 or 3 to worry about.

My Sprog II, which I've had for quite a while, works just fine on my Mac - I had a friend help me install it who is much more computer-literate than I am, and the only problems he had were when he tried to be "too clever" and thought he could skip several stages of the instructions ("oh, we don't need that, let's just do it THIS way....").... long story short, he couldn't! ;)
So my experience is that if you follow ALL the installation instructions, and don't try any shortcuts or skipped steps, it should all work fine.......

Jon.

I agree with Jon, follow every step of the instructions, especially about Com ports. Methodically does it.
Having said that, mine appears to be dead now. I'll have to start again. It does stay on all the time that my computer is on so my be its got boiled.

Ah right, if the decoder is doing a little dance/click then SPROG and JMRI are alive and talking to the decoder.

Are you getting "unable to read from decoder" or is it reading and not recognising which decoder?

So, these locos you're trying - what decoder(s) have they got in them? LGB, Massoth, Marklin, Something else?
It may be you don't have the decoder templates for those types imported into your DecoderPro, or it may be DecoderPro can't identify exactly which decoder it is - though it can usually get the manufacturer and then say something like "multiple decoders in family" and expect you to choose which one.

Exactly what my sprog3 did using a win8.1 host computer. After fighting with the sprog, my photographic software, and the support groups for windows and the computer manufacturer for the 1 year warranty, I "upgraded" to a remanufactured Win 7Pro machine and all my problems disappeared.

GOOD LUCK
