Sound problems with Mogul

Demonstrating my Mogul to a potential buyer, the sound was not working. It has am XLS fitted. Upon inspection we found that the wires in the multiplug had been ripped out. Problem is they are all the same colour except one and I have tried all sorts of combinations but to no avail. The wring in the tender is easy to work out but I need to check inside the loco to make sure no wires have been torn out and see which wire does what. My question is can I test the sound part of the XLS somehow and how do I get the loco apart to check inside. Thanks.

Can you supply more details about the locomotive - make, model number, etc. I fitted an XLS into a LGB Mogul recently so may b

Thanks. Looks identical to mine so I'll dig out my notes and post later when I'm off my iPad and on my Mac. ( I changed the use of some of the cables between tender and loco so I checked out their original purpose first - hopefully your setup is still factory spec)

Also, if you haven't already done so, take a look at this link - http://champex-linden.de/lgb_produk...F8AE9B9CCB805256CBC006B532B/$FILE/23191-1.PDF

This is the service parts schematic for your loco and the last 2 pages show connections.

Hi again. Sorry for the delay in responding; got caught up in something.

The attached shows the connections as I found them on my loco. However, please note my Mogul was bought secondhand, so I can't guarantee that the previous owner hadn't tinkered with the wiring before I got it.

(On my loco the wire for "Track Right" is coloured brown; all other wires are black. Yours may differ)

If you didn't fit the XLS yourself, it would be a good idea to open up the loco to confirm what each wire does. As I recall dismantling was pretty straightforward - some obvious screws on the bottom and 2 or 3 at the front of the cab, and a bit of jiggling to get the cab away from the boiler. (Apologies if this is teaching granny to suck eggs.)

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot Ralphmp, I assumed the brown and black were speaker + and - ! Will have a rewire tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the schematics, very helpful.

I respectfully suggest that if is at all possible you check the speaker is O.K., especially if power has been applied to an incorrect wiring combination. I once spent a fair while wondering why a sound installation didn't work before I discovered that the brand new speaker was defective!

By the way the speaker polarity doesn't matter unless there is more than one speaker fitted.

Absolutely agree with Neil. I believe some Moguls did not have a speaker fitted as standard so the multiplug only had 4 wires to it - 2 for rear light and 2 to carry the track power from the tender pickups to the main board. In this configuration the black/brown wires are used for track power.

As I said above, unless you're certain which wire is which it really is worthwhile opening up the loco to double-check.

Looks like an issue with not using the correct coloured wires, not your fault on a second hand loco but one that is well to remember. I ALWAYS use the LGB basics for colour coding of wires to Chips. Saves lots of hastle if you have to do any work at a later date.

Good advice which I've tried to adopt where I can. I wish I knew where to get multi-coloured ribbon cable from as this would make replacement of the standard "all black" variety much easier and make it obvious where the factory fit wiring has been changed.

Just one example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-14-16-...hash=item41ad5ff3fb:m:mDJpDJNSi0QHwNIDcWOd76A

Maplin Store local you? They sell ribbon cables for use with the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino........

As for colour coding, same as JonD, use the White/Brown/ Green/Yellow combination for the connection from the motor block to the decoder, for the lights and and functions I use the standard NMRA colour coding scheme.....

Sorry but I don't know what Raspberry Pi and Arduino are. Cable on eBay looks ideal but doesn't give any indication of max current? (I've always been told that current rating is the most important thing to consider when buying cables). As for Maplins, the local one closed many years ago and my "nearest" one is part of a city centre shopping hell!

Thanks for the link to the NMRA standards.

If you wire the mogul incorrectly, the tender will have track power to the electronics in the engine, thus damaging either the audio driver chip, or the reverse function for the rear light!!!!!

Excellent point and why I spent ages checking connections before I plumbed in the XLS and turned on the power...

I did wonder if it was possible to pull them apart - thanks for the tips; gives me confidence to have a crack at it (and I like your new avatar!)

Hekate - just wondered if you've had any luck getting your Mogul sound to work?

OK update. Took the Mogul apart and checked security of wires and what goes where, did the same with tender. Luckily I did have the correct wires to the speaker i.e. brown and black. Confirmed the speaker is working and reassembled, still no sound. I am beginning to think Dan is correct and that the sound chip has been damaged. If Muns reads this - can I remove the XLS and have it checked, either by you or send it direct to Massoth ? Bit cheesed off about the whole episode, I was hoping to have it sold by now !
