Sound in a 2085 Mallet

I have just acquired a used sound card which has apparently been removed from a 2085 Mallet. It is marked LGB 22852 v 1.0. I have an analogue 2085D I Mallet, which I will eventually convert to DCC. The card has three 3-pin sockets on one end and a flying lead on a ribbon cable at the other. I have no instructions and cannot find any information on the net about this card. I want to know if it will work on analogue control (initially) and what the connections are. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hmmm, having just gotten my analogue 2085D back from having a motor replaced, this post is pretty apposite. Bearing in mind the age of my loco - 35 years and counting - what is the general consensus on the best sound system to install? Right now I make do with the LGB sound box car, but I'm very conscious that it's only a 'make-do'. One wag of my acquaintance advised me to fit a couple of Phoenix systems - one for each engine - but my days of spending £500+ on a loco are long gone...

TIA

If you're running it on analogue at the moment, Tac, and maybe thinking about digital conversion later - then my suggestion for simplicity of installation would be a Massoth "S" with the correct sound files for the Mallet. For about £100, that will give you a good sound that will run happily on analogue, and if/when you ever want to convert the loco to DCC then you can do so by simply adding an XL driving decoder to accompany the S module. Use a nice big speaker like a Visaton FRS5 or FRS7, and it should sound great!

Thanks, Jon. Nothing is less likely than me running it on DCC at any time. My garden line, such as it is, is only set up for analogue after I hook it up - it's usually steam or battery r/c. However, I DO run all of my trains over at our club layout at Ramsey Mereside, and they are analogue or, occasionally, MTS, for the two of us that have such locos.

Thanks again. And one last question - do you have a movie clip of the actual sound?

To hear the sound sample, go to Massoth's website (Massoth.de), into "products" then "decoders", and find the entry for the XLS sound decoder: in the listing of available sounds, go down to "DR Mallet C'C" and click the little loudspeaker icon. That will play you the sound samples (I think the music is overlaid to prevent anyone copying the sounds from the sample!). Note that the listing for the "S" module just shows three generic sound files (steam, diesel, electric) but ignore that, any of the sounds available for the XLS can be loaded on to the S for you by Mark at GRO or by any other good dealer.
I couldn't just copy and paste a direct link to the relevant page, due to the odd way the Massoth website works!

The beauty of the Massoth S is that it is so simple to install - just two wires to track power and plug the speaker in - and that it runs quite happily on DC or DCC.

Thanks - but it won't play for me. I get this instead -

残念ながら、このプログラムは現在、国際的なライセンス制限のために見ることができません。

I guess it would work on Windows, but my PC doesn't operate on Windows, being Japanese.

What browser do you run on your Japanese PC, Tac? It should be that which makes the difference, not the operating system...... works fine for me using Firefox.....

Mm, OK...... anyone else have trouble accessing the Massoth sound samples via Chrome?

Jon.

You could think about a Battery Conversion using Peter Spoerer kit and MyLoco Sound. Probably cost a little more than the Massoth Decoder but would give you another Batty Loco, plenty of room inside once you get the lid off.

Ploon gad, Sir!

I already have two locos with Peter's gear inside - even though I screwed the first one up by forgetting to isolate the motor from the track....all sorted now though, and running like a small, clanky little dream.

Seems I'd get a ton of batteries inside that loco too, but that is not the case, until I figured out that I could replace the ballast weight with the same weight of batteries.

tac, just back from the Fosse where I met Mr. Duffy.

Nearly bought a Mercian dismal kit... But, as I have never built an etch-kit, thought discretion might be a good idea..??
Had a long talk with a man about MGR wagons.. There may be light at the end of my tunnel after all..
