I would like to make a simple sound system for steam locos. Years ago, I had the guts from a Bachmann HO steam sound fitted into a gondola. A magnet on the axle activated the sound. Crude but effective for my purpose. I've been looking on Evilbay for something I can use. Anyone have any suggestions?

Greg shows how you can make your own sounds using Picaxe on his website - http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/satr/electronics.htm#sound

Or use one of those chips which fit into musical birthday cards - http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/satr/electronics.htm#chips

A few more ideas on here - http://www.gscalecentral.net/sounds/an-elcheapo-sound-card-system-well-an-alternative-anyway/

Oh, and there's also MyLocoSound of course - http://www.mylocosound.com/largesteamsummary.html

And there's a Velleman mini-kit - http://www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=347727

I use these very basic Bachmann circuits in 2 of my steam locos.

I trigger them by magnets on my loco driver wheels passing past reed switches mounted on the chassis.

This bloke has a kit for a simple steam sound which is similar to the Bachmann ones.

He also has a diesel sound kit which I use in conjunction with a picaxe program that provides delay so that the engine revs increase before the train moves (thanks to Gregh for that one.) and a heap of train kits aimed at HO users but they could easily be adapted to G scale.

I just ordered an AHM HO gondola with steam sound. It's the type made in the '80s. So it is simple, not soimple. It uses two brass wipers to make contact with a brass strip on the axle. I will probably use a reed switch with axle mounted magnets instead.
