Social Distancing Design Competition :

Hi All,

I hope everyone reading this is still well and keeping themselves safely secluded, please continue to do so. While most of us are stuck at home, I thought I'd try and give people a proper 'reason' to be drawing pictures of trains and playing with the styrene/bits-box/etc. Or at least, something that looks like a reason if your partner, children or parents should ask about this.

So, with Paul and Lisa's consent, I'm announcing a small competition.

The general idea is to 'design' a loco/vehicle/train you want for your line, and preferably one you can't buy commercially, based on one of the motor blocks/chassis listed in the rules proper (below). This can be to any scale (or none) to go with 45mm track. It can be finescale, rubber-ruler, freelance, or completely fanciful. Rule8 applies, there is also no need for this to fit in with your existing railway collection/theme.

If you win, then what you win is the motor block you said you needed to build the thing. And a thousand beady eyes watching for notification of you starting a build thread.

Ennui Vehicle Design Competion - Detail Rules :

1. The competition is open to everyone :

No age limit - but if you are under 18, please obtain a parent or guardian's permission to take part.
You do not need to be a member of the forum to enter.
You do not need to be a g-bits customer to enter.

2. One entry per person :
If multiple entries from a single individual are detected, all of them will be discarded and that person disqualified.

3. Closing Date :
Midnight (UK time), April 30th, 2020.

4. Publicity :
By entering the competition, you give explicit permission for g-bits and the forum owners to publish and comment on your entry and any associated materials if they so wish - the winning concept will definitely be published/highlighted, along with the winner's name.

5. How to enter :
Any of -
(a) post your entry in the thread (link below) set aside for the purpose.
(b) PM me using the message system.
(c) email me at the address found on the company website

Thread for Entries :
Vehicle Design Competition Entries - G Scale Central

Please DON'T put entries in this thread, that way it's clear for admin, rule clarifications, etc. Thank you.

6. What to enter :
You can use any method that shows your idea and design thinking - hand drawn sketches, scale drawings on paper/CAD, photos of a cardboard mockup, anything that conveys the essense of the proposal. The same goes for explaining your construction methodology and/or any existing parts you would plan to incorporate. The better the judging committee (me) understand your idea, the better your chance of winning.

You can change/develop your entry after making it public. Once the 30th of April has passed, I will contact every entrant to check I have the final version of their design.

Please use one of the above electronic means of submission. DO NOT use physical post, they have enough on their plates right now.

7. Judging :
The judging commitee will consist of me, and the sole criteria will be 'Entry I most want to see someone build'. The judge's decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

8. Prizes :
There will be one (1) winner and their prize will be one (1) only of whichever of the motor blocks/chassis (see list below) their design used, plus UK shipping. Delivery will be in May (if possible), later if the quarrantine situation or custom modifications demand it. Should a Non-UK entrant win, they will receive a shipping credit for a minimum of £6, but may be asked to pay the remainder of the shipping costs to their location. Non-UK winners are entirely responsible for any fees, taxes or charges levied by local customs, authorities and shipping agents on the receiving the prize into their country.

Additional prizes and/or commendations MAY be awarded, solely at the judge's discretion and personal expense.

9. List of permitted chassis :
This is basically everything immediately available from stock, most/all of the wholesale warehouses now being closed for the duration.

By Manufacturer :

Aristocraft :
All the C16 based blocks - standard with 8 wheels, or any of the 6 wheel flyrcank diesel blocks. I can also supply these blocks as 0-6-0 steam chassis, with either of the centre axles removed - this involves custom modification of the rods, and would delay prize delivery while I adjusted them to suit.

Bachmann :
I have available 4-6-0 "Annie" chassis, with metal walschaerts gear. There are two slightly different versions, but they're basically both all-over black. (They aren't on the g-bits website, should probably fix that.)

Hartland Locomotive Works :
2.5 inch wheelbase 'interurban' block, including the cosmetic truck frames if required.
All variants of the 3 inch wheelbase 'Mack'/Sparky block. (note H300 is currently being replaced by H301, but they are essentially functionally identical)

Piko :
Br218 block, 36105.
saddle tank block, 36107 (like a BR80 block, but black instead of red).
Br 94 block, 36108.
6 wheel Harz camel block, 37542-35. This is very similar to the saddle tank block, but with BR218 type disc wheels.
For long wheelbase 4 wheel types, both the 36107 and 37542-35 can have the centre axle removed.

In principle you could also use the Taurus (36104), BR80 (36106) or Mogul (36109) blocks, but if you won you would have to wait a while for the prize, certainly until the end of social distancing, and possibly until the factory had made more.

USA Trains :
84mm wheelbase block (as used in NW2 and S4)
94.5mm wheelbase block (as used in F3, GP7/9, GP30 etc.)

10. Rule Changes :
g-bits reserve the right to change, amend or add to the rules as and when necessary to improve clarity or ensure fairness. IT IS NOT OUR INTENTION TO DO SO UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Any changes will be published in this thread. No other party has the right to modify the rules in any way whatsoever.

Think that's it - On your marks, Ready, Steady, Scribble!

Although the rules are clear, I still have a question: What if all my upcoming ’wish’ projects all involve one tramway company? For some projects I already have the kits but not yet the power units...? Out of competition?

I think you could still enter - there's a line somewhere. Maybe :

11. Already Started Projects

"I plan to build this loco/tram (that I wanted anyway) from these parts I've collected/converted/made" is OK,
but,
"Here's the already finished and painted loco body just waiting for the power unit to be fitted," isn't.

Having started already is fine (we need enough to see what you plan to do), but there still needs to be a decent amount of work left to do. More than just bolting in the motor.

In the end, it's case by case, but just stick to the spirit of it. And if your workbench is anything like mine, there are plenty of projects that are little bit started, some material gathered, but plenty of work left to do. Just need to pick (only) one.

Just a quick reminder - only three weeks left before the 30th....
