A few more photos as the Ruston comes close to completion. Mainly the windows and roof left.

The last photo shows some parts removed from a diecast excavator which was scrap. All car boot sales have someone with a box full of old damaged diecast toys for 10p each. The excavator had its rivets drilled out and it yielded an engine with bonnet and 2 hydraulic rams, Most are destined for a water pump truck. I am aiming to build this wagon next. Excellent!! That rust finish is most impressive.:thumbup:

I wish my models looked that good close-up. :(

The Ruston in convertible mode (no cab roof) has been doing a little shunting and I have at last got round to fitting the windows so that the roof can go on soon. I have a novel way of making the windows that I thought I might share with you. When the body is finished it goes to the spray shop and I always mask the windows from the inside so that I don't get overspray in the cab. Make sure you rub the masking tape on well and there are no creases. I leave the masking tape in place until the top coat is finished when I mark each piece of tape with a

number and draw a plan so I know what piece of tape represents what window. The masking tape is then removed

and taped onto either suitable clear plastic or microscope slides (real glass). The spray paint on the underside of the masking tape gives an excellent template for cutting out the window.

Be careful because as you cut away each side there is less and less masking tape to keep things in place.

Round off the corners if required and try them for size. If you didn't mark the bottom edge don't worry there is only 4 possible ways the window could fit,
Glass or plastic I glue the window in with PVA glue spread around the inside of the window aperture. Beware when using glass the fit has to be snug but not tight. Dress with a fine grade sharpening stone to fit and do not push too hard as you have used your template and you don't want the window to break.

Very neat idea. I also mask from the inside which is one reason I like my cab roofs to be removable. I've never thought of using the marking tape as a template. All the best ideas are dead simple.

HI Ken , what a great little loco, the detail is lovely and a very clever way to get the size of the glass right - an idea I will keep written down , if I may regards Dave
