Ruritanian Railways - 2013

After nearly three months of silence from Ruritania while our nation struggled to defend itself from storm and flood, signs of life were to be found on Ruritanian Railways today.
"Kaiser Otto" was rolled out at Zenda station with a short inspection and engineers train. Signs of storm tossed leaves and landslips were abundant. The platforms will need attention from the Cleaning Section too.

The Kaiser was operating on battery power, but the electricians were immediately at work monitoring Ruritania's DCC control system. Panic almost ensued when it was found that all points were electrically dead. However, some careful checking of plans by the supervising engineer showed that various connections had become compromised. Workers at once attended to the first problem on Pootank Pass, installing special rail clamps. This action was repeated at several other locations, restoring all power to the pointwork.

Power systems having been confirmed operative, Ruritania's rail grinding train was put to good use. Despite several weeks of disuse, most trackwork was in reasonable condition in upper Ruritania. Connoisseurs of the Ruritanian scene will notice that Zenda station's platform railings and some habitual passengers and staff are missing, pending reinstallation after the station area is given a spring clean.

Lower Ruritania was under water twice in late 2012, but, remarkably, all point motors worked at once after debris was cleared away. Unusually, so did all the reed switches for automatic point operation: normally at least one of those gives up the ghost each winter. There is still time for a hard frost of course. A shot of the engineers' train at the Border station shows that the site still has a fair amount of silt around. This too will need a good clean before the (portable) buildings can be brought back from store. Doubtless our Customs officers will soon reappear too!

The two trains crossed at the border. The section beyond always requires manual attention due to the quantity of tree cover locally. However, with a little effort service across the border was restored. Work is still required to clear debris, but through running was achieved thanks to the courageous efforts of the workers of Ruritanian Railways. Three cheers for the peasants!

Ruritanian Railways MD took the time to make a tour of the system and presented all those who laboured today with a gift from our benevolent ruler, HSH Prince Rudolf: a sumptuous meal of our national dish of black pudding and pork scratchings in a curry sauce, washed down with lashings of ginger beer.

Although a little later than usual, the management, staff and small furry animals of Ruritanian Railways wish all our friends

Happy New Year to you and yours too! A great post and amazing how you have got even the leccy points working at the bottom end!! Must come to play trains before too long!

Ian

All good wishes to you and the people of Ruritania, and thank you for such an interesting start to the new year.

Overall, the Ruritanian Railways seem to have come through the bad weather very well.

If only the UK could deal with flood as quickly as Ruritania.

Nice to see the brass never got washed away.

Respectful greetings to HSH on the occasion of the New Year, and many congratulations to the workers on the achievement of so much in the face of great adversity

Steve

Prince Rudolf has asked me to express his gratitude for your kind sentiments.

Today has been another busy day in returning Ruritanian Railways to full operation. A shot from the bomb bay of one of the RAF's Cessna (very) light bombers shows activity at Zenda this afternoon. The rail grinding train is back on duty, now paired with a van to which it is electriclly connected for surer progress. Over the winter, Zenda depot fitted the loco with an LGB lighting cable which snakes its way from soldered joints on the main plug which attaches to the chassis via convenient holes in the chassis to the rear of the loco. It is not an especially elegant solution, but it does ensure the loco does not stall due to its short wheelbase.

On the other track is a test train formed of Ruritania's original two locomotives (vintage 1998) and the first of the hoppers to receive their annual service in Zenda's maintenance shops. As is well known, the hoppers are used intensively for invisible ballast traffic, a source of much export revenue for our glorious land. The hoppers spend almost all year in the open air, ready for instant operation, and hence accumulate more than their fair share of dirt, bird droppings and spiders webs. Every year all the hoppers receive a through scrubbing with particular attention to the "uni-bogie" pivots and wheelsets. Everything is investigated, cleaned and oiled, ready for another year's operation. Only by classic Ruritanian attention to detail can such pleasing sights as this, taken today at the foot of Pootank Pass, be guaranteed:

Observers of the Ruritanian scene will be glad to see that the quarry area has been restored to normality with staff and buildings back in position. Work is still required at the border station. Watch this space!

Stainz locomotives in multiple. Now there's a thought.....

Thanks for the update and send congratulations to the brave Ruritanian aviators and their excellent handling of the aerial cameras.

Can we assume this to be typing error or is in fact Ruritania a whole year in front of the core plannet?

Also are we predicting flash flodding towards the end of the year:nail::nail::nail::nail:

I was wondering which of you would be the first to spot that..... :@

We all spotted it - but we were just too polite to mention it :bigsmile:

Knowing GSC, I find that entirely improbable!

honestly.. we are..

Friday dawned sunny, but cold in Ruritania. Passenger trains ran, but by the time our photographer was active conditions had changed markedly. In freezing fog, the railbus found no customers at Pootank Pass.

You want to watch that invisble ballast.......be a sure source of bribery and corruption.....

Quite - though invisible, does it have mass? If not, how do the authorities know the difference between an empty and loaded wagon....? ;)

Reminds me of the VERY old joke of the building site worker who, every night after work, would wheel his barrow off the site with a tarpaulin over it; every night, the foreman would stop him, sure he was nicking stuff off the site - but every time he looked under the tarp, the barrow was empty. After a few weeks, sure the guy was up to something but unable to prove it, the foreman trumped up an excuse to get him fired anyway. A little bit later, an inventory check found that the site was short 24 wheelbarrows......

Ruritania is a land of absolute probity in all things. It is unthinkable that there should be corruption, not least because Princess Katerina has spent all the available money.
How to tell whether a wagon is loaded? Just look at the springs and load indicators. Simples!

AHH Soo

Even though tiss officially annotated as invisible ballast - it evidently does compress springs and even show up on the indicators- therefore it must have Mass/weight.

Per-suthe - it may well be worth qualifying, especially when on the "PooTang pass" challenge - that one is not [heaven forbid] up against a some what lightly loaded consist - especially if invisible balast wagons are in play.

A very few - possably somewhat un-gracious rumors are abound, especially in some circles - mainly it is thought from personages whom may perceive they have been slighted/nay even ridiculed for their apparent lack of sucess.

One such rumor has it, that Prince Rudolph - althought known as an all round jolly good egg, really does not like to be bested in things a kin to his kingdom
and so may well not be averse to the occasional turn of the royal brow, away from such obvious trickery or even the inclusion of added Lead ballast to best the endevours of the guest/visiting {competing} loco's.

If these rumours are even to be considered by any of the be-spoke personages on this very fine forum, may we be enabled to peruse - mass and drag figures in any future endevours, if only so as to be able to 'Poo Poo' such silly and ungracious rumours.

Long may these Holly Toombs be graced/nay blessed- with the trials, tribulations, hurculean and ever succesfull endevours of the overly generous, kind and knowble principality of Ruratania, along with it's most esteemed rulers.

Humbley yours

Gadzooks Rob S, your postings have the semblance of the ramblings of the Slobovian peasantry!

Let it be freely known that our most noble and fine Lord, Prince Rudolf, should never be suspected of chicanery, deviousness or other perfidy on pain of duelling with chopsticks in the time-honoured manner. That His Serene Highness has the goodness to provide supplies of lead to the unfortunate who fail on their exertions on the much-feared Pootank Pass is the stuff of legend. This may be attested to by such luminaries as: David, Earl of Hub; Mel the Magnificent; Ye Lad of Shropshire; Cogges, destroyer of Lego toys; Bram the one-named; and Gareth, Lord of the Stalls. Yea and at truly reasonable rates per kilo forsooth.

Be it proclaimed that Pootank Pass is the supreme test of locomotive ability, be the wagon loads full or empty and all are welcome to attempt to demonstrate that their motive power is hard enough.

God Save The Prince!
