Router bits

tramcar trev

all manner of mechanical apparatus...
I was searching for a 2.5mm sloting cutter as I have some modifications to make on my caravan and this popped up. It would come in very handy for running detail mouldings for buildings etc; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Router-Cutters-Trend-Doll-House-Set-1-4-Shank-/151340449139?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item233c97fd73&_uhb=1

I see the original price label is nearly Au400. Still, they look a quality product if you have plenty of use for the set.

Enthused by the response another search reveals that you can buy the cutters individually;

Some come from the UK.....

Just about every shape there - - - except the one I want! :(

I will now go look at the manufacturer's website. ;D

Yes...... If I have one regret about selling off machinery it would be selling my Quorn.... :'(

Even the manufacturers don't have the one I want (well not in the size), but I did get an idea for making my own so that may be the way I go. I don't have a Quorn, but I do have a Stent T&C. and silver steel is easily obtainable, and hardened

When I was a student in Leicester, I heard Dennis Chaddock explain the design of the Quorn T&C - it was a mystery then and remains a mystery now. However a well made one is definitely model engineers eye candy. Me, I'm a modern peasant, so its replaceable tip tooling all the way.

Odd; I can't find any tips to fit anything less than about 1" (25mm) dia. Makes life difficult for cutters under that. ;) ;)

They come a bit 'keen' on the wallet if you replace them in the quantities I go through them. I spent the best part of an afternoon a couple of weeks ago, just re-sharpening cutters. Mind you the carbide tips aren't that cheap either, around £40 for ten, unless you get lucky on eBay or such. ::)

Best purchase ever was a set of replaceable tip endmills in a wooden box cost LESS than 3 HSS ones....

I have a nice 3" dia. one that takes 5 tips, fortunately I've never 'crashed' it so manage not too badly with rotating tips. Not a lot of use for slot-drilling a 1/4" groove though. Horses for courses an' all that! ;D

I still wonder how they make 1mm endmills; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3x-1Pcs-2-Flute-1mm-x-5mm-Shank-HSS-End-Mill-Cutter-Cutting-Milling-Tool-New-/400616578329?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item5d469bdd19&_uhb=1
If I want to buy these retail in Canberra I'm looking @ $10.60 ea...

I just wanna know how you don't break 'em!!! :o :o

I buy them in job lots of 10... And run them at 5000rpm ;D

My miller doesn't go that quick, only about 1500 max!

Well you'll have to lash out on one of these, but dont try and use a cutter over 8mm dia; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CNC-Metal-Motorized-Mini-Milling-Machine-For-Teaching-Handmade-DIY-Crafts-/151080142432?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item232d140660&_uhb=1

Ahhh! I've been wondering about one of those for a while. Can I justify it to "Trousers"? Damn; can I justify it to me? ? ? ?

It's been 'on watch' on eBay forever.

Trend are very very good quality cutters.. grind many of them a day at work.. they're even better after we've sharpened them ;)

Keep your eye on them, occasionally 1 comes up as an auction and I bought the entire set ("8" machines) for AU$178... Definitely strictly for light work.... And small enough to smuggle in to an aged care facility when the time comes....

This is the other thing I've had an eye on, they come and go at a wide variety of prices.

I used to have one but it was not Windows compatible, only ran up to DOS 6... I sold it and have been eager to replace it, they are very versatile from making PCB's including drilling the holes to making Name plates and everything else that can be engraved/milled within the parameters of the machines capabilities... Shame they don't like steel because they are good enough to make tokens...
There are traps to watch for, some of the cheaper ones use second hand stepper motors that have been sold off because they don't "step" within tollerance anymore...
